    Some Interesting Charity Paychecks

If this info is indeed on the up and up, and I believe it is, UNICEF will never see another dime of my money.

As you open your pockets for the next natural disaster, please keep
    these facts in mind:

The American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans
salary for the year was $651,957 plus expenses

The United Way President Brian Gallagher receives a $375,000
base salary along with numerous expense benefits.

UNICEF CEO Caryl M. Stern receives $1,200,000 per year (100k
per month) plus all expenses including a ROLLS ROYCE . Less than 5
cents of your donated dollar goes to the cause.

The Salvation Army's Commissioner Todd Bassett receives a
salary of only $13,000 per year (plus housing) for managing this $2
billion dollar organization. 96 percent of donated dollars go to the
    cause.

The American Legion National Commander receives a $0.00 zerosalary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their families and
    youth!

The Veterans of Foreign Wars National Commander receives a
$0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their
    families and youth!

The Disabled American Veterans National Commander receives a
$0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their
    families and youth!

The Military Order of Purple Hearts National Commander
receives a $0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and
    their families and youth!

The Vietnam Veterans Association National Commander receives
a $0.00 zero salary. Your donations go to help Veterans and their
    families and youth!

Also, not fact, but at least a reference to the VFW Commander salaries is all I can find:

Most "commercial" charities do pay their employees, and as a result some of the money spent does not go to the charitable purpose. You may recall a few years back when United Way was in the news, in part because so little of their contributions were going to the charitable purpose.

Many Christian denominations (churchs) fund charities. I assume other faiths probably do, too, I just don't know about them. For example, in the United Methodist church the charities are called "advanced specials" and there are something like 500 of them. One does not have to be a church member to contribute to them, and the advantages of contributing through the advanced specials are:

        1. 100% of your contribution goes to the charitable purpose (administrative expenses and salaries are paid by the church with general funds, so none of these costs are borne by the charity).

        2. You can control what your money is used for. If you contribute to a fund for hurricane relief in South Carolina, that is all it is used for.

        3. The use of the money is clear and well defined. As a result, money contributed for abstinence-based education won't be used to fund abortions, for example.

Every year I'm hit with an employer sponsored charity campaign, which typically goes to United Way to distribute funds. While I understand the idea of having money automatically deducted from the paycheck, I choose not to participate. If I want to donate to a particular charity, I would rather 100% of my donation go straight to them than UW or some other organizer having to take any cut to run the program. Plus, I'm personally still put off with UW and their stand on an organization near and dear to my heart. If I say more, I'm probably saying too much.

It's actually worse than you think. There are a number of "charities" that continually run radio ads soliciting donations for used cars. One has now started throwing in a vacation worth a few hundred dollars for each car donated.

What really makes me angry are trade associations and other similar businesses that are allowed to operate under Section 501-C3 of the Internal Revenue code. I know of at least one that acts as an advocacy organization for private, for-profit businesses primarily to provide a salary for it's sole employee. Another example was even more questionable - a "charity" that competed with private businesses but used the tax code to escape taxes on any profits it might earn, which presumably could then be paid to the founder in the form of bonuses. The founder was adept at wooing public officials, presumably using money from his "charity".

BEFORE contributing to any charity, I check:

              http://www2.guidestar.org/ and

              http://www.charitynavigator.org/

unless at least 85-90% of contributions go to what they represent, I do not contribute.

And I check snopes and urbanlegends before believing ANYthing I read in an email.

Too many fake "charities" and spamming liars out there!

As Mulder said: "The TRUTH is out there," if you care to not be misled.

if some of those charities painted unfairly lose donations as a result of such postings then it would be a real shame. Just be careful that you are sure its correct before posting such stuff.

That's nice, regurgitate a bunch of inaccurate info from an email and then get defensive about it when someone reminds you to check facts.

The problem with only looking at salaries is you don't get the whole picture. If a CEO makes $500k per year but the organization brings in $2 billion is he more of a scoundrel than a CEO that makes $10k in an organization that brings in $20k?

Did mom call you and tell you to hurry home from work and deal with me? And, who said anything about any CEO being a scoundrel, certainly not me.

So if I posted I'm not going to read posts (do business, donate money) by/with sweensdv because he kicks dogs and hates kittens according to an email, should we all believe it?

Let me guess, you also believe Target is owned by the French, Microsoft will pay a cash reward for forwarding this email, and if you don't buy gas on a certain day the price will come down.

Now you need to forward this post to 10 of your friends or bad luck will happen to you. A guy in Ohio didn't forward this post and he was hit by lightening the next day!
