Wow, 30 Years Ago Today, Raiders of the Lost Ark Opened

    http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/06/11/ra...ary-spielberg/

I think Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of those perfect summer movies. I just missed out on Jaws, SW, Close Encounters, but Raiders, Empire and ROTJ were all in the theaters when I was around 7-12 or so, which will always be the golden age of summer movies for me.

    I'm getting old.

That was three days after I'd gotten my license and I took my then girlfriend to the Cottage View Drive in to see it.

I miss drive-in theaters. I never got to the Cottage Grove, but we had four within an easy drive and spent many nights watching the show... or not.

After seeing the latest in the Raiders set of movies, my eldest daughter was hooked on all of them.

Cottage View is still open in Cottage Grove. We go three or four times a year. Vali-Hi just off I94 and Manning on the way to Hudson is still open as well. Good place to take kids, bad place for teenagers!

I was 14, and watched this with a couple of class-mates, and had thought that this was THE BEST MOVIE ever. (Watched it recently and I downgraded it just a teeny bit to account for some Ahnold movies ). This was the first movie I went to without my folks, bicycling all the way to town, and felt all independent. When I told that special girl in class the next day, her eyes went wide in admiration, swelling my head even more.

On reflection, maybe I should try and do that now - bicycle all by myself to watch a movie and feel all independent...

Thanks for posting - brought back great memories.

I guess I'm the minority that found the movie series boring. The first one was marginal, but the next however many were unwatchable. Then again, I don't do well with movies that aren't founded in the real world. My wife won't watch movies with me, I just can't get "lost" in the fantasy. I used to have the history channel and discovery, but then reality tv took that away from me also.

It's funny you guys talking about where you saw this and others. The same day I read about the anniversary, I happened to be on the side of town that I grew up on. The theater I saw all the great movies in is now a pile of rubble, which makes me really sad. I had a lot of great memories of that place.

I was thinking the same thing! I used to go to the drive in a lot, but I seldom saw much of the pictures. When I did watch the show it was a bad night.
