    TV went dark this morning

This morning my Mitsubishi 60" DLP, 2.5 years old was very dark when I turned it on. Luckily, I had purchaces a replacement lamp from Mitsubishi right after I bought it. Opend the back panel as instruced and lossened two screw on the lamp holder slid it out and installed the new one. 10 Min and I had a nice bright TV again, how simple. Upon inspecting the old lamp I discovered the inside of housing and reflector was covered in a fine flim of dust. Got out my little air can and blew the dust out and it looks 100% better, I didn't bother changing the new one back out as it was all buttoned up functioning. I did blow the area out where the housing goes and the little fan thats back in the chassis. Six months from now when I pull the lamp housing out to blow out the dust I will put the old one back in to see what it looks likes and depening will keep it for the spare incase the current one take a dump unexpectedly. The manual says the lamps are good for about 3000 hours so we may be near that but reall don't know. It was sure a lot easier than when we first got married and had to pull the tubes out and go to Radio Shack to test them usually on a Sunday night when RS was closed and a good show was on. Of course there was always Thrifty Drug Store that had tube testers but never had the tube you needed.

I wonder how many of our members have no idea what you just said about tubes?

That seems like a relatively easy fix. Dust can play havoc. One of our TV's is a 32" HDLCD. It developed a shaded area on the upper part of the screen. Seems to have been more prevalent when the picture was not so bright. Moved it to another room when we got a new TV. After the move, the shaded area disappeared. Now, after your post, I'm thinkin' that maybe some bug had died on the bulb, and caused a shadow, eventually falling off.

Don't feel too terribly old... I have a MarkBass Compressore Tube Bass Compressor Pedal on my wish list... They still make tube electronics...

FWIW, I have a DigiTech BP50 that is about 6 years old, I have never been able to figure out how to work the thing...

I think so I was a kid when solid state became the thing, heck did not even have color until I was in college and that was a old crappy console set. Bought my first new color TV in 90 or 91!

When I was a kid we got about two or three stations over the air, I think I spent about as much time looking at the warm glow in back of the set as I did actually watching some show.
Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things

I remember the repair guy coming out to fix the TV more than once. He had a mirror he'd set up so he could see the picture from the back of the case.

Until I left for college, I was the remote control for our TV. When I left, the first thing my dad did was buy a TV with remote.

Some things from "the good old days" I don't miss, like three channels, static, and snowy pictures.

I can remember late night TV at the end of programming, the Star Spangled Banner would play, and then a test screen with the station channel number in the middle would display. It was either that or just a static screen with hissing.

We just had radio until I started high school in 1952. There were a lot of good shows on the radio back then. My favorite was The Shadow.
