    Supermoon Saturday

I just read that the moon is unusually close on Saturday night, and the moon will be full. Supposed to be cloudy here..shrug.

Nice tip. I like to view these rare astrological occurrences. Weather here will be clear – I’ll probably go out and take a peek, then pause thinking about the vastness of everything, then go in. Good call - probably would have missed it.

It was pretty impressive last night. My neighbor had his first of the season bonfire last night and I noticed the moon as I went over. It was about 28 degrees and clear. It was fun sitting in lawn chairs wearing a down parka, sipping beer and enjoying a nice roaring fire. Only 3 neighbors showed up so it was a small gathering but a start anyway.

"DON'T LOOK, ETHEL" But it's too late, she'd already been MOONED ...

if the sky stays clear, I'm bringing out the Meade 4.5 reflector. Should be a great viewing...

Jim, nice pics! Loved the ones with the moon low on the horizon, behind the tree. Great composition.

this animated GIF from Wiki shows the motion of the moon over a one month cycle. Shows the apparent size change among other things due to the eccentric orbit. The eccentric orbit at the perigee (close approach to earth) coinciding with the full moon (maximum illumination by the son on the facing side is what resulted in the highest brightness level (hence the super moon) in something like 18 years. It was only 18% brighter than a full moon at the remotest (apogee) from the earth so its not really THAT apparent if you don't have something immediate to compare it to (like maybe an average of 9 years ago).

                    Very nice pictures!

It was nice to view hear in NY's Southern Tier, as the sky here was quite clear Friday and only partially cloudy on Saturday night. At around 1:30 or 2:00 AM Sunday morning, it really lit up the room, casting rather sharp shadows from the big maple at the corner of the deck. I'm glad I was back here in Painted Post at the time, as the view of the southern sky is relatively unhindered. It was even better because the street light opposite me has been out.

Sunday night was completely overcast, as is tonight (so far anyway); so I'm happy that I caught it Friday and Saturday.
