    Steam Powered Sawmill

My brother sent to me a link from ThisIsCarpentry for a steam powered sawmill located in Oregon. It's very fascinating to me, combining large lumber, a large sawmill, and steam power. Very interesting to read about how they process the big trees into usable lumber.

Great read and fantastic pictures on that site. I was thinking of the mill at the Marshville Heritage Village but that is only run for demonstrations and education.

Steam powered mills are interesting, not a lot of them around anymore especially commercially operating ones. Ran into an interesting stationary one driven by a Corliss steam engine. That would probably place it somewhere in the late 1800's. The Corliss was developed for pumping water out of mines in Great Britain. This onw was hooked to a large stationary circular blade mill. It's located inGoochland County, VA at the site of The Field day of the past. A neat event that runs usually around the middle of September. They get the mill operating and run demonstrations.

Even though I live in Texas, my heart will always belong in Corvallis Oregon. That just made me severely homesick...

The first time I saw an article on this mill was not too long after we lost my FIL. I wish I had seen it earlier and could have planned a side trip on the way home from the funeral. We had stopped to visit some friends in Eugene, OR. Seeing a mill like this in operation like this would be a great experience.
