I'm Going To Lose A Family Member

One of our German Shepherds was diagnosed with bone cancer. She was a rescue from Animal Control about 11 years ago. At the time we had another one named "Casey" and wanted to have playmates.

Well, the new dog followed Casey everywhere, so we called her "Shadow". We lost Casey to liver cancer about 4 years ago. Within a week I rescued another GSD that was already named Katey.

Shadow, now about 12 years old has been a medical nemesis. She has had a tumor removed from her right front ankle three different times @ about $600 each time.

She had TPLO surgery (Tibial Leveling Plateau Osteotomy) on a rear leg @ $3200. She has torn the other front ankle ligament. So, she has only one good leg, manages to get around, and has high spirits. The medication for her cancer symptoms costs $56 for 10 days. We were told she has about 4 months or less to live. We keep her as comfortable as possible.

What was a coincidence was our getting a new puppy a week or so ago that we named "Heidi". I can't say that Shadow sees Heidi as her replacement, but the new dog gives new life to the other two. Heidi will be a distraction for Katey when Shadow is no longer with us. They were very close. We will miss her.

I am so sorry to hear this cman. Shadow and you family have obviously given so much to each other. She knew how much she has been loved and gave it right back.

My shepherd is also a rescue dog and I do it again when she passes.

We're sorry to hear that you're

going to lose a member of the family. Just remember your "Rainbow Bridge" and hope that will ease the suffering. (I have that hanging on my office wall by the computer, it helps for remember my Wolf years ago; I thank you for sharing that plaque.)
Having Shadow with you for the remaining months will be special. Sadness along with happy times, bitter sweet.
So many people don't realize how special canines, and other creatures, are; becoming family members that we love. They become kind of human in their actions and we become kind of canine in ours.
I'm ramblin' and need to stop. CabinetMan, enjoy your blessing of having Shadow with you for what times left.
        Roger

I can't think of anything to add to what everybody else has already said. Losing a special member of the family is very tough. Shadow sounds like a special friend.

She is a loved member of the family. Enjoy the time you have left and I know that even though she may be gone, she will never be forgotten. My sympathies to you and your family in the time to come.

Having been through the loss of a beloved 4 legged family member this year, I feel for your impending loss. Be there for her as much as you can. And enjoy what time you have left... Take LOTS of pictures if you can...

A physician once told my father that one of the greatest tragedies of life is that dogs don't live as long as humans. I think he was right. My condolences.

That s*cks. Having had to put a beloved dog down was one of the toughest things I ever had to do. But of course it's far better than having a friend suffer.

Sorry to hear about that. Bone cancer in dogs is really tough. I know several people who have lost dogs to it.

Keep her comfortable and enjoy all the time you have left.
