Help with aspect ratio on new pc monitor/hdtv

Hi gang - We got a new 23.6" LCD flat screen PC monitor that's also a high def TV (Auria EQ2488F)...we're using it primarily as a monitor. When hooked to the PC the picture is stretched too wide, and distorts the proportions of things. I can adjust the aspect ratio in TV mode so it looks normal, but not in PC mode. I've tried adjusting the "display" settings in the control panel, and that doesn't seem to help.

I'm not very knowledgeable about these things. Does it seem normal that this device can't be adjusted when hooked to the PC? Any other suggestions?

Which interface are you using to hook it up to your PC? have you tried setting your PC resolution to 1920 x 1080?

1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz
1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz

800 x 600 @ 60, 75 Hz

Thanks for the help. It's hooked to the VGA input.

I tried changed the refresh rate from 75hz to 60hz, and increased the resolution to 1680 x 1050, but anything larger is saying it's out of range. It is improved though!

it indicates in the manual that the native resolution is 1920 x 1080 so the aspect ratio is 1.77:1.
1680 x 1050 is about 1.6:1 so that will appear a bit squashed vertically.
Since the pixel arrangement is square (same spacing vert vs horizontal) then you should probably set your PC to 1920 x 1080. if it (the PC) won't accept that maybe you need to update the display drivers.

Many TV+Monitor combos won't accept full 1080i resolution over a VGA analog cable. Nor will all computer video cards/chips be capable of going to that resolution. What video card/chip is in your computer? Device Manager should be able to tell you if you don't know.

If the computer has a digital output (DVI typically, or DisplayPort or HDMI if it's really new) that will have the necessary bandwidth/capability to drive the TV+Monitor to full 1080 resolution. DVI is usually a white connector with several rows of pins offset to one side of the socket; it's about an inch wide - just a bit wider than the typically blue VGA connector. Look for that on the computer/video card. You can buy DVI to HDMI cables/adaptors too if the TV+monitor unit has HDMI inputs but no DVI input.

Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family are the drivers....dunno if they're sufficient or how to update them. The PC is a Pentium 4 era HP.

Your most likely problem, as mentioned by mpc:
If you have a connected display using a VGA cable, check your monitor's supported resolution.
Some displays (especially TVs or HDTVs) support their large native resolution using only a digital DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort* connector. These displays only support lower resolutions (such as 1024x768) when using an analog VGA connector.

Check the display's documentation (user guide or user manual) for the maximum resolution supported by each of the monitor's connectors. Some monitors refer to the VGA connector as a D-sub input.
