    Problem with laptop computer

Okay, we have tried all the quick fixes from Google searches.

The problem - no image on screen, but everything else is powered up. We even connected to an external monitor and no image, but the monitor did act like it was receiving some type of signal (the monitor only displayed the "no signal detected" message after disconnecting the cable.

The laptop is an HP Pavilion dv5-1002nr. Purchased in August of 2008.
    AMD Turion-X2

Of course I am trying to avoid paying a repair shop, but I am at my wits end on this thing.

As always, thanks for any help you can provide.

You might have to go to the shop, I'm afraid.

I'd say the graphics chipset ('video card' for the laptop) is blown, as I don't see how the video cable might have come loose inside a laptop (that would have been the other possible problem). Either way, not something you can DIY.

You might want to call HP tech-help-desk for preliminary advice. Never know, they might offer better insight, or even cheaper repair.

This same thing happened to a friend of mine after she dropped her laptop. Turned out it was a loose cable.

This doesn't sound like the issue since you get no signal on an external monitor, but a simple thing to check would be to see if you can toggle between various display modes--LT only, external only and LT AND external.

I know on Dells and ThinkPads, the combination is the Fn key, plus another--Fn+F7 on my ThinkPad, for example.

Also, check the BIOS to see if there may be a goofy setting or something. EDIT--I just realized you can't check the BIOS if you can't SEE the BIOS. Unless you have a braile laptop, of course...

After re-reading the OP, I think radhak and Joe are right - probably not a loose cable and possibly the video chip.

That's why I asked if there was anything during post. It could be just an incompatable display setting, which could be fixed in safe mode if the display was phisically working.

More than likely, it's the chipset on the motherboard. From what I've read HP had a bunch of Pavillions with bad graphics. I got my mom an HP DV9000 a few Christmases ago. It's on its second motherboard (which has now failed too). I can get it to post and into the BIOS and sometimes into windows, but not for very long if at all. The graphics will corrupt, then go black.

offhand it sounds like the video chip is partially working.
The monitor is receiving synch signals which is how it detects a signal. But the actual video signals (separate from synch in a VGA signal) are absent, so no pixels light up.
When you take the cable off, the sync is lost and then the monitor reports no signal.
So its looking like a motherboard problem.

PS BTW, video problems detected during POST are indicated by a series of Beeps because obviously screen messages can't be depended upon. So if you hear no beeps during POST then the video interface to the processor is good, again pointing to issues between the video graphics section and the display driving circuits.

+1 on this reply. If nothing comes up on the initial post- either on the laptop screen or on the external- then it's certainly going to be a repair shop visit.

Thanks for the info. Guess I was just needing some support/confirmation. It will go to the repair shop tomorrow.

Sure will be glad when this computer fad has run its course and the world can get back to the way things were meant to be.............................

how good are you at "reflowing" the chip?

I have a DV9000 that had a dedicated graphics chip that would on occaision, break some of it's connections to the motherboard

the fix was "simple" I would tear my laptop down, remove the motherboard, and take a small butane blowtorch and reheating the chip to at least 250*f to remelt the solder under the chip and reattach it to the motherboard...

this is probably the situation in your case...

HP did a lousey job testing these systems out, and they fail with a great regularity... \

                      good luck...
