I just had a molar pulled and one of the sockets went dry. Painful. The cure if you want to call it that is something called clove oil (Eugenol). It is the most vial tasting liquid that I think I have let past my lips. Think of the taste of cloves concentrated 100000 times. It does however kill the pain almost instantly and it has antiseptic properties too. I will never be able to look at a ham cooked with cloves in quite the same way.

No it's not. The directions say to try swallowing as
little as possible of it. It's still horrible. But the pain
relief is just amazing. Trade offs sometimes suck.

that's the first thing i thought of. the main character was dustin hoffman. Yeah, is it safe?

I hate to drag this up again but I think the dental sector has it in for taste buds. I went in to see the dentist because the dry socket was causing so much pain I could not sleep and the left side of my face was starting to swell up. They placed a packing in the dry socket that to say the least tastes as horrible as the previous clove oil (Eugenol) concoction. This packing tastes like a mixture of clove oil, iodine, sulfur and old burnt rubber. It does not have the over the top strength of the clove oil but it still tastes horrible.

They used that packing when I had problems after having my wisdom teeth pulled. Your description of that taste sounds exactly like what I remember - it's so nasty that it's unforgettable. Definitely sets a new standard for bad tastes. Good luck.
