Impressive... Had a couple like that around here over the last few years. Some can be filled in, but most just become lakes.

I figured this money pit was going to become a lake and drive up the property taxes on the surrounding businesses.

I would like to see pictures from the bottom of the hole (cave structure still, or completely collapsed?)
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

you don't want to be inside that hole. Heard it was possibly caused by sewage problems. Anyway it smells like raw sewage they say.

There was a real beauty near UC, in the Orlando area (Winter Park), 100ft. deep, 300ft across (1981).

Ah yes... remember this one well. Took a couple of nice Porsches right out of a mechanic's shop to a watery grave. The place looks like a pond now. There are some notable ancient ones in places like Clermont and Gainesville that make this one look puny. There's one in Orlando that forms a very small lake... they've sent divers down, and used sounding equipment, but they can't find the bottom...

If you want to see some of these as they look today, you can find the one in Winter Park by Goggle "mapping" (with the satellite image turned on) the intersection of W. Fairbanks Ave. and S. Denning Dr.

The "bottomless lake" can be Google mapped by searching "Lake Como" in Orlando.

One of the nice ones in Clermont can be seen by Google mapping "Lake Sunnyside".

It is suspected that many of the hundreds of the small, round lakes that dot central FL were actually formed over the ages by sinkholes.

                  If we're comparing 'holes,
Here's one that opened up in Daisetta, Texas May 2008, a 600-foot wide one.
                  http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...09624&t=h&z=17

it's next to a major highway (~100 ft) and the high school is located in the lower right corner, only about 1200 feet away; at the time school was in session and they were very worried about that but it appears to have stabilized.
You can see the small road that went through the hole before it opened.
A business was half swallowed, they were injecting waste brine (salt water) from oil production into the ground and its suspected that they were exceeding their permitted amount altho I never heard the final outcome. Apparently there's a salt dome located underneath the town and oil production in the area.

this one's pretty new you can see the damage.
The ones on the Florida maps appear to be quite old sinkholes, the streets and construction seem to have been built around them.

I watched the video that accompanied the winter park sinkhole and the newscaster said that it reached over 600' wide by 150' deep! That is really colossal.

Yes, many of them are prehistoric. But hardly a year goes by that a new one doesn't open up hereabouts. Just goes to show that they are a part of the status quo, and have been since before people came around. Also, every once in awhile, a lake will simply disappear overnight... like somebody pulled the plug in a bathtub.

I wonder if homeowner's insurance covers something like that?

A separate policy or rider is necessary for most in FL now. The ins. companies don't want to cover it at all, but the state forces them to, I think.

Got curious, and apparently that is an urban legend:

                            http://www.cityoforlando.net/public_...wqr07/COMO.pdf

says "Local folklore indicates this lake is bottomless, however its maximum depth is twenty-five feet."

Throw in more 3 story buildings. Repeat until full.
