    Yard sale season is here!

Finally had a weekend off and the weather here in the NY Catskills was grand.

Wife was away on business so it was just me and my Brittany and we hit all the back country roads looking for yard sales and places for the dog to take a swim.

Saw a sign for a moving sale and it was out in the middle of nowhere so we followed along and probably drove 5 miles up into God's country till we found the sale.

Apparently they sold the house and are heading back to NYC so all the stuff had to be sold. I got completely out of control at this sale because most of the tool stuff was practically new and probably only purchased for a single job and then never used again. When I asked prices of items I might be interested in I started making a pile of stuff I was buying.

He had a 5 HP Rigid shop vac that looked almost new but had a broken tab that holds the motor to the canister. It still worked perfectly and I figured I could fix the tab thing. $5. He had a beautiful 100 foot, 10 gauge Rigid contractors extension cord laying in a tangled heap for $20. Also a Ryobi corded drill and palm sander $5 each and a brand new Coleman lantern for another $5. By the time I was done I spent $50 and loaded the back of my Accord wagon with a bunch of nice gear.

Now for the best part. When I get home a buddy stop over and sees all my treasures. He told me the Rigid shop vac has a life time warranty and to just bring it down to the HD and get it replaced. I didn't believe that and bet him a few beers that they would not replace it with out having the receipt. Off we went heading for the Home Depot. I now have a brand new $80 Rigid 5HP shop vac sitting in the shop and bought him a few more beers then I bargained for. While there at the HD I went back to electrical and found the 100 foot contractors power cord on the rack and the price about knocked me off my feet. I paid $20 for it and it sells for $112.97. Checking further I can see where I bought close to $400 worth of slightly used tools for less than $50.

My wife is the yard sale expert around here but she will be very proud of me for this score and I will be ready to go with her on her adventures in the future. This guy had a garage full of good things even after I was done and all priced at next to nothing just to get them gone. He kept saying, " I can't carry this stuff up three floors and cram it all into a 2 BR apartment in NYC".

I wish I had gotten there earlier and with my pick up!

Happy hunting out there and don't be afraid to stop at some of these sales once in a while. Most of them have a lot of junk but some of them have great bargains.

Nice!! Great Haul. I've many a great deals at garage sales. The ones that have tools are rare to find and the ones with good tools are extremely rare. But when you find one, there's a good chance you come out with a great deal.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I avoid yard/garage/rummage sales because I often find bargains that I have no use for or space to store but am still willing to drag home. I'm always worried that I'll find a NIB 12'" Jointer and a 25" planer for $100.00 each and I do not have room for them in my shop. I'm not sure if this thought is valid reasoning or merely wishful thinking. At yard sales I can become an impulse shopper and have been known to become very irrational. To off set what I miss in perusing yard sales, I watch the neighbors for their "I'll set it on the curb and maybe it will go" stuff. Now there is a place I have gotten some real bargins. But that's another whole thread. Then there's dumpster diving, checking construction sites for discards and the off cut shelf/damaged goods/markdowns at the home centers.

I'm looking to expand my hand plane and antique chisel collection this summer, so starting to get excited. That said, the odds of ever finding a collection of infills? Zip.

I did see a number of old planes in poor shape at several yard sales this weekend. No infills though. There was one sale that had a Delta unisaw that had been left out in the rain for $50. Everything was frozen up. What a shame.
