Don’t talk to aliens, warns Stephen Hawking

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,” he said. “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”

Scenario One; they're Good, in which case they'll destroy us to rid the universe of a species that would enslave, murder, rape, lie, profane, and otherwise act human to other people

Scenario Two: they're Evil, in which case they'll destroy us in a bid to enslave, murder, rape, lie profane and otherwise act human to us

But on the other hand if our planet hosts the only life, much less sentient life in the universe it would be the greatest practical joke of all time.

Heck, I can't even talk to my next door neighbor, how can I talk to a space alien? Get Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith to give them a virus.

If they are even a bit like us be afraid be very very afraid. I mean just look at how we humans treat our own. Would you want something like us to invade from the stars? Of course they could be methane breathers and our atmosphere would be poisonous to them so whatever. There are endless possibilities. Science Fiction can only presuppose so many different imaginings to what alien life could be like. I would bet the reality is far more strange than anything they have cooked up so far.

That's the crux. While no amount of imagination might get us close to what they actually look like, our own self image is scary. We have not behaved well when we came across stranger civilization - we captured and enslaved them, or took over their land and put them into reservations, expressed shock at their religion and imposed our own, mocked their form of government and claimed superiority of ours, so on and on. If you know your history, this is applicable to all sorts of humans, across the centuries and across the globe.

Let us only hope whoever we meet, is very unlike us!

I think anyone that watched a few episodes of Star Trek is already aware of this.

How many peaceful alien civilizations did the Enterprise discover?

This is one of the reasons I object to what is happening at NASA. We need to learn what is out there and the way to do that is go out there.

I know I have seen something I couldn't explain. I would imagine others here have too.

If we can't fix a leaky pipe under a mile of water how in God's name are we going to deal with flying saucers blasting our cities?
