I used my DP to drill holes in the lid of an old plastic screw container to make a house for a caterpillar my daughter found. Was using the DP overkill or was setting up the fence and stops to space the holes evenly?

I would have done the same.
takes no longer than a hand drill, maybe faster because the DP is already out and set up, the fence is there and all.
Drill bit won't walk, bit won't break, can control the drill force enuf to cut but not crack the plastic.
And the end result is nicer and cleaner holes and practically professional looking.

Not at all, that's WHY you have a drill press. Heck, tonight I used my drill press to drill eight holes in the base molding to mount a couple of outlet boxes! (The molding will go around the window seat in the library.)

Overkill? Nah... However, if you had modeled the fabrication in CAD, and done it on a CNC machine, then you might have some issues to worry about...

May I offer a polite dissent? Waaaay back about 50 years ago the technique was to have the finder of the caterpillar punch holes in the lid with a nail and light hammer while dad supervised!

I would dissuade my child from putting a caterpillar in a jar. Seems kinda cruel to me. They do make good munchies though.

so what we have learned is that around 50 years ago David punched holes in the top with a penny nail and $2 hammer. Now around 50 years later, David is still punching holes in the top, but now with a $4 carbide bit and a $250 Drill press, but he's still the one doing it.

drill press, original lid? why didn't you run down to wood craft, buy a turning blank of the appropriate size, turn a new lid, and then carve some lacework into the top if said newly turned lid . . .
