How Long Are Rx's Good For?

My last visit to the Doctor I got 2 prescriptions. One for a blood test and another for a chest X-ray. It's been about 4 months as I had to wait for an insurance change. Are they still good, or do I have to get current ones?

It depends on the type of RX and the applicable state laws. For non-controlled medications, the general federal rule is that the RX is good for 1 year from the written date. For class 5-2 controlled meds, the federal guideline is that the RX is good for 6 months. There are state guidelines that can shorten that, and some states require that a controlled RX is filled within 7-14 days from the written date.

i would imagine that for tests, they would be good for a year.

Call the place where you are supposed to take the tests and ask them. After all, they are the ones who are either going to accept or reject them.

These are not Rx's, they are lab orders. I need to go every 6 months or so for cholesterol blood work and he always writes me a new one after the office visit. Don't know if it is different because the lab is in the same clinic where the doc practices.

Expiration dates on drugs are designed to keep the pharma companies rich. If there are any laws associated with them, the pharma's got them passed. The half life on the compounds are substantially longer than the expiration dates. But, to be safe you should follow them, cause you don't know. One example is how the antiviral's for Pan Flu have been getting extensions on expiration dates. No Problem...

Imagine a lobby with six lobbyists for every elected congress person inside the beltway and not one of them making less than six figures... Congressional staffers get nervous just talking about Pharma literally looking around over their shoulders. Notice how they kept quiet during the Obamacare fight? That's cause they were bought off imho. Take prilosec? It's over the counter, but your flexible spending account can no longer be used to buy it... Guess why, just one little example... And the gov can't negotiate prices either... I could go on for days. Did you know even mentioning one of the "secret" pricing points can get some people in trouble... "AMP" and don't even think about "DOD" pricing, it would make the average American livid if they knew... Pharma plants will shut down lines at shift change on hundred dollar pills to change the labels for veteranarian use at exponentially less...and still make money. And, drum roll, your tax dollars subsidize some of the basic R & D on some drugs... Does the gov get a percentage? Just imagine how much less expensive drugs would be if one third of their outgo wasn't for marketing? Remember when they couldn't advertise? Just a few of myriad factoids. Bend over... Who's running this place?

There, thanks, now I feel better. I'll let you know if they come after me... I'm not kidding... I've danced with the devil...

These were not prescriptions for drugs. One was for a chest X-ray (written on a doctors Rx), and the other was for drawing blood.

You might want to check with your doctor to make sure the blood tests will be appropriate screenings for what the doctor wants to find out. The chest X-ray is probably standard, but the blood screenings may have to change.

For example, I take some medications that require periodic blood tests that may be different than what is needed for an annual physical. Play it safe and check with the doc.

                Regards, Steve

The order for the blood test is on a form from the testing facility with individual panel items checked off. That seems pretty specific as to what the doctor wanted.
