I Thought I'd Lost It By Now

Stopped by the auto parts place on my way to work this morning. The guy behind the counter knew I'd grown up in NY. I thought I lost that accent after 16 years, but I guess there is still enough there.

Being in Atlanta last week I was hard-pressed to find a good-ole Southern accent. I still have mine and can pretty much turn it on or off at will.

My ex-wife always used to say she could tell when I had been talking to my momma on the phone because I would say "y'all" for a couple of hours.

Nah, more likely an egg cream! Don't spare the Fox's u-bet!

My brother has lived in England for 40 years, can't even do an American accent now. Strangely enough, both his kids could do a great job with it before they ever came here. The movies and tv, I guess.

When I was a kid, I lived in Vermont for 6 years or so. Left there when I was 13.
When I was around 50, I had a conversation with a guy I didn't know. He asked me where I was from in New England! He's the only one who ever picked up on that.

I was born in England but have lived in Canada most of my life. Although I still use the odd "English" word, my accent is long gone. Until........when family comes to Canada for a visit, I pick the accent right back up and friends and neighbours complain that they can't understand a word I'm saying.

At least LOML has stopped telling me to speak Canadian when family goes home.

I'm in a similar "been there, got the accent" pickle.

Grade school in the midwest, High School in Pacific Northwest, College in Arizona, and then the past 16 years in Texas. Combine that with first set of in laws from (West) Germany, a German speaking family heritage... And combine all that with being married to a Spanish speaking woman.

I can screw things up in 3 languages and at least 4 different regional dialects...

I can't tell you how many times I have said things like...

                  "That's spendy y'all..."

My wife is from Wisconsin. She has lost her accent except for when she gets excited (or angry) and when she spends any time with her sister who still lives there.

I was living in Franklin, TN. .. Pulled up to a stop light, & from her back seat position, my 10 yr. old daughter rolls down the window & Yells to the driver next to us, "Hey meester, got 'ny mustard", in a perfect southern drawl.

I knew then it was time to move back north.

                      She has since recovered completely.

A nice thing about being from here is the folks do not have an accent unless they are from elsewhere.

I'm from NW Ohio and have never left. I have been told newscasters and the like use this region as a "base" for speaking, as we supposedly have NO accent. I agree, but I assume everyone believes everyone else has an accent and they don't.

That being said, I think folks in Columbus have an accent compared to those in Toledo and Cleveland. Don't get me started on Cincinnati...

I always thought that being from Minnesota that I had clean pure unaccented speech. Then after many years I went back and found that everyone there spoke funny with this accent right out of the movie Fargo. Have to wonder how so many people picked it up from the movie, must have been one of those mass hysteria things.
