    Life Sentence

I saw a court case on TV where the guy got a life sentence without the possibility of parole, but got credit for time served. Huh?

It does happen (getting time credit) because the sentence may be reduced by the courts or the Governor at some point in the future. The "gain time" would possibly come into play in that event.

It's not as if he's going anywhere. It can happen on an appeal, that the court may reduce the sentence.

It was actually 2 consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole for murdering 2 people. Will a court reduce his sentence? I have my doubts.

I guess the law is the law, he gets credit for time served. I suppose as was said he could get a sentence reduced or something and then it would matter.

Maybe a stroke of luck will come his way. New evidence will turn up. He'll get a new trial, and get found not guilty. Then somebody will write a book about the case, followed by a movie, which will turn into Part II, Part III, and Part IV.

Maybe it gets applied in Purgatory after the life sentence ends?

Reminds me of a line in one of the Rumpole books. [Also supposed to be a true story from a judge at the Old Bailey]

The judge sentences the miscreant to 40 years. The defendant says, "Milord, I'm 70 years old, I can't do 40 years." The judge replies, "Do the best you can."
