    Questions about Craigslist

I've never used Craigslist. I need to advertise some stuff, and have a few questions. What's the cost to advertise, and what is their "account" that they ask to be created? Use an email for contact, or phone number?

I sell quite a bit on there. No cost involved. The account is simply your email address. But that is for most people - I don't know about commercial operations. I think that is also free though.

      Cabman,

I'm currently advertising a bicycle on craigslist. There is no cost to advertise. IIRC, I had to give them a valid email address, but I have received no spam as a result (at least none that got through my spam blocker.) I chose not to include either my cell phone or email address in the body of the ad. Potential buyers must click on the reply to ad button which sends their email to my email address without them knowing what it is. When (and if) I reply, they will have my email address. I've had a 5 or 6 legitimate nibbles, plus two obvious scammers. The scammers will say they want your item 'urgent' and have some sort of complicated money order and delivery pickup scheme they want you to agree to.

Previous to my listing on craigslist, I had the bike in the classifieds of two newspapers, in two garage sales, and on facebook with not one legitimate expression of interest. I'm in no hurry and winter is not a good time to sell a bike, so I'm pleased with craigslist so far.

      Hope this helps.
      - Chris.

So, there's no cost to the seller...does the buyer have to pay anything?

Craigslist charges $25 each for jobs listings in the six largest markets. It's $75 each in San Fran.

              We're all riding coattails!

I've had good success with selling on CL.

              My number one rule:

Do not give accurate address until they are on their way! Sounds mean, but saves you a hassle, DAMHIKT!

You might think I haven't contributed much to the world, but a large number
of the warning labels on tools can be traced back to things I've done...

I've listed 2 items on Craigslist. One was a boat, and the other was my 10" bandsaw. Both were sold. I think I had maybe 3 or 4 people looking at the boat before I got a buyer. My bandsaw went to the first guy to look at it. No cost.

The rule of craigs list is whoever shows up first with the cash wins. People always ask you to hold it for them or say "I want it, don't sell it!" and then don't show up. Don't play that game.

Once the item is sold delete your listing.

You can, or at least could, sell without creating an account. The account makes it easier to track things without saving emails on each posting.

The price to list is $0, the cost though is much higher than you can anticipate.

Is the account necessary for the buyer responding to a CL # by clicking on the ad # so my email can be contacted by CL, and not the buyer?

My understanding is that setting up an account allows you to keep information used in setting up the ads on CL sort of on file and you don't need to enter that info each time you run an ad or if you re run the ad. I have never used that feature, as I've only sold a couple of things on CL.

I agree with not holding it for someone. I tell people that the first one with cash that comes to get it, gets it.

Sounds like you have had some bad experience with Craigslist. Can you tell us more so we can learn from it? I have bought and sold several things through Craigslist, including a house, without even a hiccup, but now you have me worried.
