    Boxes for long stuff...

I have some items that a fellow BT3Central member has expressed an interest in buying, that are kind of longish... I need to get shipping quotes for the other party, but am not sure where to get a box sufficiently long to ship the items.

I am looking for a box with internal dimensions of at least 36x12x12.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Not sure where you can get 'em, but they are aut there. We get plotter paper in boxes that size all the time. Might check with a reprographics place or a company that does large format printing.

Fedex and others have triangular plan boxes. They're not 12" inside, but maybe you can split the items up.

I shipped some saw rails to one of the other members. I purchased a box from our local UPS store. Can't remember the exact dimensions, but I do remember that I found a box that would work laying around in our warehouse a couple of hours after I had bought the UPS box. I recall the box was pricey - somewhere around 20 bucks or so. I will make sure I can obtain a free one or include the price of a box in shipping costs before selling odd shaped parts from now on.

You didn't indicate what you were going to ship so I'm just guessing. If the item is not fragile just wrap it in cardboard. I recently sent a BT3 stand (disassembled) to someone. I salvaged a large box from the local grocery store, taped everything together then wrapped it in C-board and taped it well. I haven't heard from the recipient so I assume that everything arrived ok. This method also eliminates the problem of finding filler to take up the voids in a box and heavy items shifting around.

I have thought about that. It shouldn't be that hard to make a box out of existing cardboard given a hot glue gun, utility knife and a straight edge...

12 x 12 boxes are easy to come by, just slip them together and tape the heck out of them.

Hot melt glue has in my experience not worked well to glue up boxes. I would use mastic, liquid nails or just yellow or white glue.

Of course you could always make a sturdy box out of some Sonotube.....

As was said, if not fragile, just wrap cardboard around them. If you are really worried, take some long pieces of scrap stock, tape it to both sides of whatever you want to ship then wrap cardboard around that.

If you have a vinyl siding place nearby, they have boxes in these dimensions and longer, where you might cut it down.

When I need a odd-sized box like that, I usually just make my own. There's an appliance store and a supermarket near me where I can get a large box, then I just lay it out (using the inside to get a no-print outside) with a ruled straightedge, using a spoon handle to scribe the bend lines. The finished product is hard to tell from a prefab box, and fits the contents perfectly.

The UPS store sells 48" boxes for about $8.00 each. They are 6" high and wide. I use them for shipping golf clubs. Sometimes you can get them at the post office.
