Well, still working with insurance with the wife's back. She's visiting the chiropractor again today. However, as of last night at about 5:15, we're in another set of wheels.
After payoff on the old van and my deductible, I was anticipating a settlement of around $4k. Needless to say, I was almost dancing on the table when they handed me a check yesterday afternoon for a little over $8k!!!!
Doing the math, they gave me full retail on the old van, minus the deductible and old van payoff, plus $1.29 extra.
McConnell Honda here in Montgomery worked with us throughout the whole ordeal and treated us as if we were their best customer. On Saturday, we found that they had a '99 Odyssey EX minivan on the lot for $6,999. We went and looked it over but didn't test drive since SWMBO had just popped a pain pill. Looking at the van, it was obviously well taken care of. Had a little over 74k miles on it. Had all the options that my wife wanted including POWER SLIDING DOORS! The folks at McConnell took a $100 check as earnest money and held the van. They even told us they would give us back the check if our old van was repaired. Apparently they have been in business a very long time and follow a lot of the old time business rules. I like them.
When my wife told the dealership that we would be coming by to get the van, they said that it was one of the most popular used cars on the lot and that it was a good thing we put down the earnest money. The fact that they passed up 2 or 3 guaranteed sales to hold it for us speaks volumes to me. On top of that, they ordered new tires for the van at no charge and will be installing them tomorrow, assuming we're not snowed in. They are forecasting up to 4" here in town.
So, after we got the check and went to the dealership, they took the insurance check I endorsed and applied it to the Odyssey and are going to cut me a check for about $470. This, plus the fact I was going to pay nearly $700 next week to pay off the old van means that I am actually to the good over $1,100! Since we are paying off all our debts, this actually speeds up paying off some credit cards. (BTW: As soon as we are out of the credit card debt, I do plan on finally making a donation to the site.)
So, we're driving around in a van that is paid off!!!! It is weird that the van that is paid off isn't the one we financed for 5 years. However, we're happier with the Odyssey so far. I am aware of the possible transmission issues with this model, but we'll deal with those if they come up. However, the van has been serviced regularly at the dealership where we got it, and was a one owner vehicle. It doesn't get much better than that. I do have to say that if you're in the market for a Honda and are within driving distance of Montgomery, AL, you should check our McConnell and ask for either Richard or Matt. When it's time to replace this van, I'll definately visit these guys again. No pressure to buy anything, very friendly and they let the car sell itself.
