You guys in the heavy snow area...

The one thing that helped me through the 18+ inches we got last year was...

shovel early....shovel often....

It's easy to shovel 3+ inches of snow out of the way, multiple times during a snow event.

It's horrrifically difficult to shovel 12+ inches of snow out of the way...for those of you in the snowfall, don't wait 'till it's over, keep up with the shoveling if you can. Tiny bits over time is healthier than trying to move mountains....

This is a historic one for me

I grew up in the Mid-Atlantic area and I've never seen it like this before. This
is without a doubt the most snow I have ever dealt with--even when I went
to Maine last year over MLK weekend.


We are 20 miles north of DC. I took this picture at 7am this morning--8 hours
since I last shoveled. Almost 11 inches in 8 hours. There are some trees
overhead so the snow is even thicker in the open area. It's almost up to 22"
in the deeper parts and it's going to continue for the rest of the day.




My woodcutter whirligig is just chillin'.




Our city put in 6' grass strips between the sidewalk and the street 2 years
ago. Thank goodness because then I'd have to deal with these huge drifts
made by the plows. I cut this swath from the door to the street so I could
walk the dogs.



Well, gotta' suit up and shovel some more.

Good luck to all of you. We've had only one snow that stuck at all this year, and temperatures have been warming steadily over the time I've lived in Japan. We live in "exciting" times.

I might have to take you up on that. After 3 seasons, my shovel is on its
last leg.

The snow just stopped. It's seems like so long since I've seen a cloudless
sky. It's quite beautiful out there. My driveway and car is clear and I've
finished off 100' feet of sidewalk. Just another 50' to go. The snow was
definitely over 30". Pretty crazy.

Our "8 to 12 inches" of snow stopped around noon. I measured 21" in the free fall areas, 75" in the drifts. Spent all day shovelling, got one car dug out.

Power was out all day, too, just came back on.

Paul - I could be wrong, but I'm under the impression that the official weather folks measure snow one inch a time to compensate for compression as the snow piles up. Your 11" of standing snow could very well officially measure out to a lot more.

Since snow comes in many different sizes, densities, and consistancies, I've never really thought "inches" of snow was a reliable measure of what we actually encounter anyway....the light fluffy stuff piles up fast but isn't as treacherous to drive in as the small granular stuff. Perhaps melting it down to water and measuring "precipitation units" would be more indicative.

I live east of the City of Pittsburgh. When the snow stopped falling I started shoveling to the shed where I keep the snow blower and in the resultant path it measured 27" deep. We are to get either 4-8" or 6-10" more this afternoon through tomorrow.
