I use Hyperterminal at work to get to switches in the lab. I like it and have several config files already set up. Win7 doesn't ship with it. I copied the Hypertrm.exe and .dll file over to my Win7 machine. That works except when I click on a session file to open it directly, I get a weird path problem. If the file path is 'c:\foo\hyper.ht' when I open it directly I get an error that Hyperterm could not open 'c:\foo\c:\foo\hyper.ht'. If I open Hyperterminal and then open the file, that works. I've tried putting a file on the root and get similar error. Basically Windows is appending the path to the full path and then attempting to open the file. I also tried adding the path to the session files to my path environment variable, no joy. Any ideas?

no exp. with how Win7 works.... so I'm thinking from the standpoint of why HT might not work on Win XP when you installed as you did... assuming that Win7 is more or less like Win XP in the startup/registry areas.
So maybe there's a registry problem... have you looked at the registry entries? maybe there's a hard path C:\foo always used.
Or ar you using a shortcut? The shortcut properties have a number of path options that can mess you up.Loring in Katy, TX USA

I'm running Windows 7 with HyperTerminal on several machines and do not have this problem. The difference appears to be that I installed HT using an archived copy of HyperTerminal Private Edition, using Compatibility settings for Vista SP2 and Run As Administrator, rather than just copying over .exe and .dll files. The installer may set up something differently that prevents to double path issue you describe.
There are still a few sites out there with the free version of HT available to download so give that a try and see what happens.TheChief

The association was created.
I installed it from the exe and set the compatiblity settings to Win XP SP3. Still no joy. Also tried Vista SP2, still no joy. So I've no idea what is going on.
I will look at the registry entries.David

I sounds like it is taking the default directory at startup as its home directory, then it is saving in an ini file or registry variable the full path of the last used config file.
How are you starting the program? form a command line or short cut?
You might want to try starting from a short cut & experimenting with the start up directory setting too, when you are investigating the registry settings.Comment

Putty > Hyperterminal, nuff said
I know that wasn't helpful, but I stopped using HT back in XP so I can't chime in on the specifics...
In General, what does the Open action of the .HT file extention look like?
Something like "C:\Program Files\Windows NT\HYPERTRM.EXE" %1 (with correct path)?Comment

Yeah I am just going to start using Putty. I just don't like running into a technical problem I can't fix, but it also isn't important enough to waste cycles on.David
