It's official. He just announced it on his show. March 1st after the Olympics he is back. Conan's last show is tomorrow. I wonder what they will do until the Olympics start?

He got 33 million for himself to quit because he was doing a substanrd job, and his staff of 200 got $12M to split between them (I figure $60,000 average apiece) in severence. They'll probably mostly all get jobs at a new Conan show next September on another network. For $33 million, couldn't they stop him from working for 2 years or more???Loring in Katy, TX USA

I'd take the 60k in severance, especially when I had a good chance to be working again at the same job in less than a year. Although as I recall, when Jay took over it took him 3 years to get the ratings back up. Conan only had 7 months.David

Yeah, but... Jay was only a modestly known a stand-up, and a day-off replacement for the franchise... Johnny Carson. I can see it taking him a while. I don't think NBC could afford to give Conan 3 years to catch up to Leno's ratings. Frankly, my first, second and last reaction to the 10:00 Leno and the 11:30 Conan was that it would be a disaster. Guess I was right (it's been known to happen), and although I feel for the staffs, I'd be the first to say that NBC had it coming. They've been too smug for too long.Comment

The jokes about each other, nbc, letterman are getting old and definitely not funny. Like the $1.5 mil sports car Conan used on a gag and supposedly billed to NBC. Although I'm pretty sure he just borrowed or rented it. I think Craig Ferguson is better than all 3 guys.I reject your reality and substitute my own.Comment

I actually like Conan, in small doses, but that holds true for all of them I think.
I'm sure he would be the first to agree, but it's hard to feel sorry for a guy walking away with 33 million, even if he did get screwed, IMHO.You don't need a parachute to skydive, you only need a parachute to skydive twice.Comment

It's a pretty simple contractual issue really. NBC agreed to make Conan the host of the Tonight Show last year and put it on paper. The offer was for a program that has been at 11:30 as far as I know since the show began.
Now they want to change the terms of what they agreed to, and they did it in such a clumsy way as to tick off everyone involved.

So? Conan was always on an hour later. Also, Jay's show wasn't always plannd for 10:00. Originally he was supposed to just retire, but he decided he wanted to keep doing a show, so NBC gave him the 10:00 time slot. Talk shows don't generally work in prime time. Jay wasn't the first flameout.David

Sure they could have. This really didn't have anything to do with Conan's ratings. This was completely predicated on Leno's numbers being much lower than last years news lead-in shows.
Leno's show is cheap enough that NBC was easily profitable even with the lower numbers than last years' dramas/reality/whatever. The problem was that his lead in audience to the local news was bad enough that many stations were losing so much audience (a few 50%!) on their nightly news that they were threatening to preempt Leno's show with something else.
The local advertising market is a nightmare right now. Anything that makes it even a little more difficult to sell spots might just be enough do break the camels' back.Comment

No, it had to be rented, since:
1. There is a waiting list as those cars are ordered
2. It costs between 1.5 and 1.6 million dollars (depending on options/exchange rates)
3. He also used a Rolling Stone, Master tape, as background music
4. Part of the expense was the cost of replaying that song on the internet (of which NBC took it off of Hulu).
I was really surprised he didn't claim to be keeping the car, or that it would go the the Tonight shows "new" host, for his car collection.She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment
