I can feel your pain. I was laid off last Feb from a specialized field (renewable energy), older (60+), in an unfamiliar area (Houston). I have had no luck finding anything. I have my house on the market and would move back to SW Missouri and retire. Would stay in Houston but I can't afford the property taxes.
My son had a wonderful idea the goverment should hire unemployed workers like us to go to Haiti to rebuild the country instead of paying unemployment and sending billions of dollars to the Haitian government.
Good luck and we will be praying for you.

Fire alarm, security, sound, etc. I can't call myself an engineer as I am not degreed, but I have done engineering work for many years. It's just my personality (very detail oriented, particular, spend a inordinate amount of time thinking things through before I actually do anything... just ask LOML! ).

Omar, that's tough news. I guess most of us have been there at one time or another. For me, what seemed like (and often was) a setback initially almost always turned out to be an opportunity. Here's hoping that will prove to be the case for you.

            Ouch!

            Omar,
Good luck! I know the feeling as I lost my job a couple of years ago. My daughter got married last May and she and her new husband lost there jobs while on their honeymoon. My daughter started a job yesterday, but her husband is still looking.

You sound like me, everything happens at the wrong time. All those repair bills! When I have lost jobs in the past, I had tons of things to do, but no spare cash, so little got done.

As has been said, look at it as an opportunity. Cut back, draw unemployment insurance, unwind a little and hook up to a better job.

Sorry to hear you got the axe. In your field you may wish to look into inspector jobs. With all the highway and bridge work State governments are looking for job site inspectors. Just a thought.

That's no fun Omar, sorry to hear about it.

Hopefully we are in fact on the upswing now, and if that's the case at least the timing may be better for finding a new position than it would have been a year or two ago...

Good Luck, and hang in there.

                        Omar,

                        Sorry to hear your news.

Contact everyone you have evr met in your field and let them know you are looking. Network, network. . . .

My youngest, the computer wiz, got laid off, by Shopzilla in December 2008. Three months later, an old co-worker gave him a tip. He was hired by MySpace for nearly double what he was earning at Shopzilla.

                        Best of luck to you.

Sorry to hear about being out of a job

I have been in the same boat as you several times and I almost always came out better than where I started. Not for sure what kind of salary you are looking for, but if I were you I would check out to see if Uncle Sam needs any engineers in your area. The pay is sometimes lower to start but the retirement, promotions and benefits kind of even it out. Go to this website and you can do an advanced search.........if you do apply remeber it takes a while for the gov to hire/process someone (sometimes like 3 months after the interview b4 you start)

Hope this link helps and good luck

thanks guys for the warm words, just trying to stay positive. i wish the best to all those who are in the same position as me and for those who are fortunate to have jobs, i hope their employment continues without inturruptioin.

annunaki, that was interesting reading. i doint think i can do any of that on my own....looks pretty interesting though.

cabman, i do have quite a few questions about unemployment but have not been able to get any answers. there are no UI offices in AZ. on the phone yo can hold for a long time. i will give that another shot next week first thing. this week i had to get my kids and wife to go to the dr and dentist and vision dr since my insurance runs out at the end of the month.

so as soon as i get my resume setup, i will post it on monster and careerbuilder. a couple of friends siad that they would forward me info for a couple of head hunters.

mineengineer, thanks for the site, i will check it out.

hopefully next week i will get some shop time. my TS needs to be dialed in and that may take some time.

once again, thanks for the well wishes.

You do NOT want to let your insurance run out. The US Government is offering a subsidy of 65% of COBRA premiums under the ARRA (stimulus act). I know you have special circumstances, Omar, but I'd get on that right away to see if you qualify (along with all the other things you're onto right away).
