    Sick Kids

    Went outside tonight to start cleaning up the PM66 so I could put it back together. After the 2nd trip inside to settle the kids back down, decided just to stay inside. One daughter has a fever now, the other probably will tomorrow.

    Sorry to hear of illnesses

    Ultra Violet light destroys germs. In a lab when done with a Germ Culture in a petri dish, it is placed under an ultra violet lamp to destroy the culture.

    Ultra violet light cannot penetrate glass. This is why you cannot get a sunburn through a glass window.

    In cold weather, windows and doors are kept tightly shut to contain heat.
    In summer heat the same thing is done to contain air conditioned coolness.

    Both of these practices contribute to massive build up of germs, and movement from room to room and person to person.

    While it may cost a little more in power consumption, it's a good practice to open doors and windows for a brief period to exchange germ laden air with the outside ultra violet -purified/cleansed air. Contrary to urban myth,no one catches a cold from cold air/weather.

    If you have a ducted forced air system, there are add on ultra violet purifiers that can be inserted in such a way that eventually all heated or air conditioned air must pass the UV section and be cleansed. This avoids the costlier air exchange.

        The "massive buildup" of germs in my house is because I have two kids, both of whom spend time with other kids and they are all germ magnets. Treating the central air with UV might work, but I highly doubt it.

            If that is the case, why is it I can get a sunburn on my left arm when driving on a long trip with all the windows up? Really got me curious at this point.

              I wondered that too, but decided to leave it alone.

                I also have gotten many tans/burns through auto glass. On the other hand, I have a very old ultra-violet light rod that was used to kill germs. I remember my mom using it on chigger and mosquito bites on me when I was young and it did seem to help.

                  Uh huh. Right.

                  Study after study after study show that kids that grow up in a GERM environment are HEALTHIER overall. Such exposure increases and MATURES their immune system.

                  The "bunk" (sorry) above (which it is) has be DIS proven far too many times. Kids growing up in a "germ free environment" (which is NOT 100% possible at all) are MORE prone to getting sick, EVEN as they grow older.

                  WHY this country has become so "germophobic," I blame on advertisement ("KILLS GERMS" - yeah for about 15 minutes - save your $$$ for tools!), and BS.

                  Let me ask those who, like me, grew up in the 50s and 60s:

                  - did your mom sterilize everything? Use Clorox to wipe down the home (which works well if you do it EVERY 15 MINUTES!!!), etc etc etc.

                  Of COURSE not.

                  EXPOSURE to germs BUILDS immunity, DECREASES allergies, etc etc etc etc etc etc!

                  This of course applies to common, ordinary, household etc. GERMS ( such EVIL MONSTERS! ROFLOL!) Not to the kind you get in contaminated meat products, contaminated vegetables, etc.

                  QUIT being so GERMOPHOBIC folks! It is NOT REPEAT NOT healthy!

                  Gee: consider: mankind somehow survived without Clorox wipes, sterilizing everything in the home, UV light, Triclosan in toothpaste - and I could go on forever!

                  And I really don't care WHAT you do at home! Just walk through Wal-Mart etc, touch anything, and you CAN get a virus!

                    Kids = germ factories.

                    Daycare = germ factories.

                    SCHOOL = germ factories.

                    Wal-Mart = GERMS. On items, shopping carts, IN THE AIR from coughing etc. Wipe down everything to avoid them? Won't work.

                    Work = LESS germ factories.

                    Why?

                    KIDS have to build up resistance to infection That takes EXPOSURE.

                    Adults have usually had everything, so get fewer infections (EXCEPT for a few things in general, like the flu, which mutates every year.)

                    HUNDREDS of VIRUSES cause colds. Having 1 cold = no immunity. By the time you have a LOT, you have immunity to MOST.

                      Uh huh.

                      IF you wipe down ALL surfaces, ALL touchable items, and maybe flush it through you ducts.

                      Advertising = PROFIT!

                      Wipe a surface with Lysol, Clorox, etc etc etc, and it will be germ packed within minutes to hours.

                        What ever works for you

                        OK, sorry to suggest something that might help.
                        Do what you feel is best-keep windows and doors tightly shut and avoid any introduction to freshly exposed outside air if you feel that is best which is probably what the environments of those "other kids" are like.

                          UV light on insect bites = placebo. Bites are allergic reactions, NOT germs.

                            In that case why not start with Bubonic Plague ?

                            Better yet why not a family Vacation to Plum Island ?

                              BOTTOM LINE FOLKS:

                              QUIT being so germophobic! QUIT worrying about viruses which can in some cases survive for DAYS ANYwhere.

                              QUIT worrying about a "fever" of 99-100 when you kid is running around tearing the house up as usual. QUIT worrying about fever at all if you give Tylenol and 30 mins later the child is still tearing up the house. QUIT worrying that the fever OMG! came back 3-4 hours - Tylenol is NOT A FEVER CURE!

                              As a matter of fact, DO NOT treat "fever" unless your child is miserable, lethargic etc. Then give something and see how the child responds.

                              FEVER is NOT even potentially harmful UNTIL it hits 105-106, PERIOD! It is GOOD for you! HELPS your body fight OFF infection!

                              It AMAZES me how my mom's generation know this. And no we are FEVER as well as GERMO- phobic!

                              All thanks to advertising, IMHO.
