    Stupid Litter Boxes

I don't know if they qualify as 'stupid', but they sure make slaves out of humans. We have three cats and three boxes. They get scooped daily and scrubbed out weekly. What a fire drill.

Our cats have claws, and using liners are a waste of money. Has anyone tried the electric self cleaning boxes?

Being allergic to cats has saved me from that problem.

      Electric Litter Box

My wife bought one of these electric litter boxes a year or so ago. I does not work worth a hoot. It was a waste of money. The only thing that seems to work ( with our assistance) is a metal litter scoop. The plastic one works OK for the tirds but break when scooping the urine.

Had a Litter Maid box for about a year. After that I couldn't keep it running. There is a wire that breaks because if flexes each time the box cycles and litter gets into the tracks the gears ride in abrading the plastic gear teeth. We went back to the plain box and scoop.

My Mom had one of the self cleaning boxes, it didn't last very long.

I have had 2 LitterMaids. First one lasted 5 years. This one is well into its 6th year.

At Thanksgiving, I added a LitterMate - a console that the Maid sits atop. The scoopings fall into a bag rather than a bin.

I just emptied the bag this evening for the first time! That's a few days over 5 weeks of no clean up! And NO odor! With 2 cats, one of which could fill the LitterMaid collection bin once a week.

            Gotta love it!

A few months of work could stop your enslavement! However, cats are clever...they think they own you!!

              Good luck.

Holy crapola, that's amazing. I may just have to rethink dedicating a bathtub to the litter boxes.

Don't need self cleaning. If the kids want their allowance..........

We have two cats. They share two boxes.

I don't mind scooping or cleaning so long as they don's smell, and we use litter that absorbs the odors (guests can't smell anything). One of LOML's friends brought a kitten and the box stank. That friend is no longer allowed to bring pets with her (I can be very mean).

                      Paul,

Is there anything in particular that you think might be the 'key' to your success with this LitterMaid? I have to say, looking at the other responses and on places like Amazon... most of the feedback is not very positive on any of the brands/models. Also... do you have a link for this 'LitterMate' thing you mentioned? I haven't been able to find it yet online.

So far... baking soda has been my salvation - no more watering eyes when I clean the litter box (our new cat has enough 'stink' for about 3 or 4)

                      TIA,

                      Monte

RE: question 1: Sure. The others got lemons, not me 'cause my guardian angel loves me.

But, seriously, I talked to LM owners, and when I bought my 1st one set up a "maintain" schedule on a reminder computer system. Every 3 months, I disassemble, clean all parts (amazing where the litter can get to), and actually "lubricate" the trailing wire with a thin finger-applied coat of WD40. AND: clean the base box and the comb completely. So far, few problems.

                        RE: LitterMate

OOOOPS! My Bad! It's actually made by LitterWorks! Just another SomeTimers moment I guess!

                        https://litterworks.com/

I bought the assemble yourself version for $99, stained it to my liking, and it works!

Regular PM... figgers. More work from those little devils

How... nasty... does that thing get between services?

I like that Litterworks... between the automagic scooper system and the elevated platform, the dogs will be missing out on their 'kitty roca' that they haul out and snack on on the carpet and stairway

Since they have 6 models, maybe he has a different model than others, or it could be the type of litter he is using.

(just noticed he was answering while I was too so this may be null...lol)

I use the cheapie scoopable litter from WalMart, 20# in a green box.
