I've had the Win7 DVD on my desk for a while now, but I haven't installed it yet... I wonder I should install over Vista or just go out and get a new hard drive and start clean...
Thoughts?

Normally, I install new OSes fresh, but just on a whim, I installed 7 Ultimate on top of Vista Ultimate, and have been extremely impressed with how well it has done on my machine. At work, I installed 7 Business/Pro fresh, since I had a spare drive for the laptop.
Other than some IE8/Adobe Flash issues, I've been far happier with 7 than I ever was with Vista. IMO, Vista wasn't really useable until SP1. My first exposure to the 7 Beta told me that MS had gotten the message that most folks were not happy with how Vista turned out.

While in good conscience I cannot recommend any Microsoft products, I can speak from experience and tell you that for the most part, operating system updates are FAR better off being done on a fresh hard disk, than as an overlay to a running system.
Hard disks are cheap these days, just go grab a new drive, throw it in place of the original, and install Windows 7.

Seriously? Maybe for those on here that are IT people, but, for the average guy to go out & spend $100 on a new drive & then have to deal with how to get their data moved from the old drive to the new one. And then, what to do with the old drive? When you're several system upgrades down the road, what do you do with your old drives?

Unless you are going from Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate you will have to do a clean install anyway. I did the Vista to Win7 direct upgrade on my laptop and everything went well. I should add that when using the laptop, I keep all my data files on a thumb drive and not on the laptop. Thus, there was little risk that I would lose all my data during the upgrade.
I also have the Win7 upgrade disc, but I want to upgrade my desktop from XP Pro in 32 bit to Win7 Pro in 64 bit. I am also approaching this with great trepidation.
I will watch for a report on what you actually do. Hopefully, you will have lots of hits and words of encouragement.
Buy a new drive. They are cheap. Plus you can throw the old one in an enclosure and use it for backup. And if you don't like it, your current install is still intact - just swap the drive back in.

The chief cause of failure in this life is giving up what you want most for what you want at the moment.
MS has a bad reputation for leaving a lot of junk behind when a new OS is installed over an old one. Will work well, but the junk is still there. And of course even &, a MUCH better OS than Vista, will have "service packs." Sometimes they don't "fit" well with the left over junk.
