Anyone have a Tom Tom GPS?

I got a new gps system after my first one got stolen Still ticked about that one. Anyways, I decided to give Tom Tom a try and see if it was any better. I'd like to take advantage of their map updates but know there is an issue about bricking the system because the new maps won't fit. Do you first have to delete your current map first. I assume you do a back up before doing anything (which I did). If anyone has successfully updated their unit let me know. I have a XL 340 S model.

The only issue I have run into when doing map updates
to my tomtom is that I lose my stored locations. It does
take a while to do the update so be patient, figure about
an hour. I have a subscription and update quaterly.

I have two TomTom Go720's and never had a problem updating maps with Windows. With the Macintosh version of the Tom Tom app, the map updates worked but would disable the traffic monitoring every time.

For those of you who have any version of the TomTom, one question:

Just how "future proof" is it? If the model you own is no longer made, does it remain up-datable? For how long?

Or does it become an "orphan" eventually? Like computer software?

Ooops. One more question. I just read an Amazon review that says TomTom's Home Software does not work on an Apple with Snow Leopard.

Anyone have a TomTom and a Mac?

There was a new version of the TomTom Home app that was released in late November. It works with Snow Leopard for maps and updates with the exception that I can't get the traffic service to install. TomTom's technical support has been useless.

Agreed. We have a chartplotter on our boat but I still always carry current paper charts and a log book which both get updated hourly with our current position. When in doubt the paper chart wins. I can recall at least 3 times I've lost GPS signal or had it degraded to the point of uselessness while we were well offshore.
