    and yet another PC question

Sorry, but the answers here are better and faster than the computer groups. I am suddenly having a strange problem with Outlook Express, when I click on a new message in the list Outlook Express closes. This started a few days ago with it closing only occasionally, but yesterday started closing every time so I can no longer read any mail.

maybe do you have a alternate text editor (word perhaps) that is called up to enter the message? If so, maybe the alternate editor is no longer working for some reason and it kills Outlook expres.

I know Outlook allows alternate editors.

being lazy i would say download Thunderbird and forget outlook express is on your computer or at the least it would provide a client for you to check your email until you get outlook express up and running again.

I would agree with knobcreekman, I have given up on IE (what version now?) and Outlook for my web interface completely. Have not had any problems with either Thunderbird or Firefox. Waiting for the day Linux becomes a contender to be completely free of MS. Just my thoughts.

Nope, just how it comes. It's been working fine for 3 years and then it just suddenly went toes up.

I may have to look at Thunderbird if this keeps up.

Some here would argue that Linux is already a contender and has been for some time.

I would also switch to Thunderbird or just move to web-based mail like Gmail. It is so much more convenient and I can access my mail from anywhere there is a computer. Although you can use a mail client to access Gmail, I don't.

What version of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are you using? Do you get any error message at all? And I assume you are running Windows XP? If so, what Service Pack has been installed?

If you're using Win2k or WinXP, check the event viewer for errors. That may give you a hint about what is going on.

I'm betting you have to re-register some DLL's.

Try V and VI in this link:
                http://ctimls.com/Support/KB/How%20T...ok_Express.htm

DO NOT perform the step where they have you compact your folders first (IV), as you don't want to make such a sweeping change on a malfunctioning OE. If you ARE going to do that, backup any OE data files FIRST.

I will third the advice to just avoid the problem and download Thunderbird and Firefox. It's really easy to do, and though I'm a nerd, I'm not a computer nerd. I think that even Microsoft privately agrees that the Mozilla products are better.
