Well I Back From The Surgery

Was first in line this morning so didn't have to worry about it all day, which was nice. It went as well as it could have. Once they got me in the OR and got the happy juice in, it was interesting. All of a sudden the room got real small - the ceiling looked to be about 2' away then I don't remember anything else until the nurse was talking to me in recovery. Apparently I drank about 1/2 a can of sprite while waking up. She gave m a can with a straw and I wondered why I was getting a can that was only 1/2 full.

Pain is not bad at all, at least yet. As long as I am sitting I am comfortable. Standing is ok provided I don't stand for too long.

FIL went throught this a few months ago. He thought he could ease up on the pain meds later that day. He was mistaken. Take it easy Davey and heal up soon.

Hmm... just saw the thread title. I guess I am not all the way back from being knocked out.

Take your time. Don't be like a friend of mine who had surgery a few days before I arrived to go fishing, then carried his infirm dog down to the creek from the airport.

Speedy recovery Dave, but no heroics for the first week after a surgery... baby yourself, you have no clue what free loading bugs your body maybe trying to fend off from the hospital.

Happy to see your back. Glad everything went well, now rest and relax for a while. Good football coming up.

Standing is not good but gets easier. Coughing is really not much fun. Sitting is OK. Laying down is better. This morning I was a little sore, was better yesterday. I hope it was the coughing I was doing yesterday and not one of my son's presents which felt a little heavy when I was wrapping it last night (he can carry it back downstairs).

My limit is 10 lbs. Is yours the same? For 4 weeks.

I take pain killers to sleep but not during the day. You should take as many as you need, however, especially for the first few days. I also think walking helps - feels better to me than standing but up and down hill hurts a little.

My limit is 20lbs for 6 weeks. Sitting is actually better for me than standing. If I stand too long it starts to ache. Otherwise I feel really good. I don't have much choice on the medication. The surgeon said 2 pills at each dose till Monday then back it down to one. My jailer, er wife has decreed it will be so.

Do your pain pills carry the same cautions as mine? Don't drive, for instance? I've been doing a few work related emails so I wanted to be clear headed. A few calls too. I also figure a little pain helps me remember my limitations. I went for a good walk late morning, about 45 minutes and over 2 miles, maybe close to 3. I feel better now. Also put away about 100 luminaries and trimmed the bushes (had to weigh the extension cord but it was just under 10 lbs on my fish scale).

LOML graduated to heaven last year about this time - so my ride home was my son (fortunate to have him) and he spends a lot less time worrying about me. So I can take pills as I please.

Yeah I am told don't drive while I am taking them. I don't really have anywhere to go for the next week anyway. As far as clear-headed goes, I seem to be ok. I am not having any problems with that at any rate. Surgeon also recommended no driving for a week after because it might require a sudden movement to hit the brakes and that would hurt.

I thought I was OK on the painkiller from the prior surgery - it was Tylenol with codine which is not what I have this time - but when I needed to concentrate on work "stuff" I had a little trouble. Surfing the net was fine and this kind of stuff did not seem to be affected. I haven't tried doing work "stuff" on the painkiller they have me on this time. I may stop taking it even at night. I still had a little pain last night but only on one side and the painkillers did not make it go away enough to lay on that side anyway.

I walked another 2-2.5 miles in 30 minutes (better than 15 minute mile pace) today.

I did not drive until Thursday after surgery on Monday. My vechicles are both manuals and my surgery was on the left side but shifting didn't bother me. I did not have to brake hard but I think I would have been fine. If I had LOML to drive me around, I would probably let her, however.
