    simple instructions for FAQ request???

The follwoing SIG line follows my posts.

PM me (with your e-mail address) for a copy of the BT3 FAQ current vers 4.8

I gotten maybe a hundred or more requests for the FAQ. Somewhere between about a third and half the requests fail to provide the e-mail address and i have to ask them for it.

How can I make it clearer that they need to give me their e-mail address?

'Bout the only way I know of is to ignore them if they don't...

      Loring,

Aside from having you know who and how many people get the FAQs, is there a reason you don't have Sam just put the file on the server for download?

      Otherwise I see three options:

      • Uncle Cracker outlined the first
      • The second is to see if their profile has an email address associated with it and send it there.
      • Lastly, have Sam post the file to a hidden location then you can give out a link in a PM when asked rather than email it. That way you can keep track of stats if you want to.

      My 2 cents.

this has been hashed before. I can update the FAQs periodically and retain control this way w/o having to rely on someone else to modify anything or allow me access. I get 2 or 3 or 4 requests a week and can handle that easily. I like to see whos requesting and can add comments when i've seen their posts. It's more personal.

Profiles here don't show e-mail addresses as a matter of security and privacy. I can send a PM direct to your e-mail address but its hidden from me unless you chose to reply. I can't attach a file of any size to that PM.

Its not a THAT big a deal to ask them for their e-mail address, I just wonder how they can overlook a simple and obvious instruction (or maybe someone can tell me why its not simple and obvious).

It's probably just simple forgetfulness, occurring between the time they read your sig and compose the PM. I have been getting a ton of requests for the plans for my Dual Width Extension Wing, and about a third of those don't include an email address, either. Of that third, perhaps 10% will send me a second PM saying, "Oh, I forgot to include my email!" The other 90%, I have to nudge.

                BFH!

Or get mod power here. You get a request, and no email, you restrict their account and they contact you to ask you why.

Then again, some people always believe directions are there to do the opposite of.

Maybe some of the members don't have internet access or email.

I think it's pretty clear, actually.

                    Here's an idea.
Have them email you the request, That way if you don't get an email address, you don't get the request

Perhaps, like me, some have the option enabled not to view signatures - I find their repetition very distracting and annoying, so if I want to view one, I go to the poster's profile page.

These same posters will probably know that you provide this FAQ service from elsewhere on the various forum pages, but if they've chosen not to display signatures, they won't know what yours contains.

Otherwise, it's probably a sinister conspiracy.

Or they actually listen to the folks who tell them not to put their real/non-junkmail email address on any bulletin boards. Not really an issue in this case of course, but I'd rather have folks who call me for help err on the side of caution rather than clicking on every blinky window they see, or putting their info into any textbox that asks for it...
