    Changing surround sound speaker color

I want to change my surround sound speakers from black to white. The front
grill comes off but I need to change out the grill cloth which looks like it will
be a challenge. Where can I buy grill cloth locally? I can buy it online but
this is something I want to do over the long weekend and don't want to wait
    for it to ship.

I'm tempted to just buy a new system on black Friday but then I'd have to
    spend more money.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Radio Shack used to sell grille cloth in the stores, but I don't think they do any more.

Go to any fabric store and you'll find a variety of mesh type material that will fit the bill. I've used burlap, which may have a texture not to your liking. But look around there is a lot of choices.

Check out Parts Express. It's been a while since I've done much work with speakers, but they're a good source.

I would just go to a fabric store and find something with a similar weave and in an agreeable color. It won't be as acoustically transparent as real-deal grille cloth, but for surround speakers that won't be hugely important. (Here I am assuming it must not be a really high-end system, since you mention a reluctance to spend money on a new system. I've never met an audiophile who was reluctant to pull out his checkbook. )

local hobby electronics stores, if you have any, carry that kind of stuff. Or maybe call a place that does speaker repair in your area (Yellow pages under HiFi or High Fidelity).

A very loose weave is used for grille cloths, because the tightness of the weave attenuates high frequencies. Looser than you'll find in a fabric store, probably. A lot of people take their grills off.

There are specific cloths made for this application said, but unless you are an audiophile, you probably will not notice. I'd go with what Loring said.

The fabric store. You want a stretchy fabric w/ an open weave. So hold it up to the light, stretch it, and make sure you can see through it easily.

So far big goose eggs. Decided to check at Radio Shack nope. That's not too
far from the Myer Emco Audio/Videowhich was no, and they pointed me to
JoAnn's Fabrics next door which was yes for black but no for white. I've got
another fabric place to check out but if they haven't got it, then online it is.

Only the speaker fabric at JoAnns was stretchy. All the other white fabrics
like their curtain shears didn't have enough stretch.

Parts express didn't have any? I buy lots of stuff from them for work. They are a good company.

I painted a set of black grills blue once. Turned out really nice. I painted the speaker boxes white. Did it all with spray paint. I didn't notice any effect on the sound.

Thanks. I think I will try that. If I mess up, the grill's got to go anyway, right?

I did pick up some fabric called "ponte cloth" at another fabric store. It has
similar texture and porosity to the speaker fabric.
