    Speaking of IBM

"A computer with the power of a human brain is not yet near. But this week researchers from IBM Corp. are reporting that they've simulated a cat's cerebral cortex, the thinking part of the brain, using a massive supercomputer. The computer has 147,456 processors (most modern PCs have just one or two processors) and 144 terabytes of main memory — 100,000 times as much as your computer has."

So at the end of the day, they have a computer that eats, sleeps and poops. I am NOT cleaning that litter box.

Not to mention that since it's from IBM, it'll ignore you.

Interesting post. On the plane today there was an article in Discovery about a researcher in Europe using an IBM supercomputer to simulate a brain. So far he has gotten part of a rat's brain complete. His ultimate goal is to simulate a human brain.

Quick! Find those chips and dump them in molten iron before the Terminators arrive!

            Speaking of advanced...

What ever happened to Cray or Big Blue? Now days we just hitch a gazillion Intel chips together and call it a super computer (and it performs like one). The only good news is the Chinese are about 2 trillion teraflops behinds us! (Can't even imagine a teraflop and now they are measuring in petaflops!). Beam me up Scotty.

Jack, from what I've heard, the 700 lb terminator is already in your area, bullets bouncing off his skull! Biggest bear the rangers have seen?

I think it was two years ago now, someone in a college computer lab, put together 8 playstation 3's with their cell processors. They ran some simulations and at the time, it ranked with the fifth fastest supercomputer. Now you can find articles on building your own.

This is the latest news on supercomputers:

                    http://www.informationweek.com/news/...leID=221800185

I don't think any eight PS3 array computer ranked anywhere near the top ten of these babies. there are benchmarks for massively parallel computing machines. I don't see any results claimed on the threads I followed on the PS3 arrays. it sounds like a bit of hype to me.

P.S. ok so the Wikipedia article
                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercomputer
does mention the eight PS3 array and rating in Petaflops (2.5) as part of a bigger cluster.
There's also a annual list of the top 500 supercomputers by benchmark ranking you can google "list of 500 supercomputers"
