    rotating the bulbs

Yesterday a recessed canister 4" flood light burned out. My wife noticed it buzzing and blinking just before it failed and then said oh, it just burned out. Not that infrequent an occurrence as we have six of them in the kitchen and 6 more in the den.

Today I was using the pole and suction cup (because i have nine foot ceilings and there's no finger clearance anyway). to remove the lamp and she walks in saying oh, is the lamp burned out? clearly forgetting the dramatic failure last night. No i say, I'm just rotating the bulbs to even out the wear.

Anyone else get in trouble like that?

Do you rotate your tube type florescents so the black spot on the ends are even all the way around?

I'm curious, what did you replace that incandescent with? I now have 50w quartz PARs in mine. They seem to last longer and give about the same light.

How about changing out the old stale air in your tires for fresh air?

I get into trouble like that on purpose. It keeps things interesting. Of course, I also work hard to show her I am nuts about her.

                Bill,

Yeah, I buy 65BR40 (65 watt, 4" indoor floodlights) - they run about $5 apiece, not cheap. I've tried some fluorescent replacements but their color is awful and my wife dislikes them in the kitchen, den and entry hall.

I don't see any quartz halogens that would fit a BR40 and they're not any more efficient and probably cost more.

Have you tried any LED bulbs? The ones w/ gobs of output aren't cheap, and I think they're still dimmer than conventional bulbs. But you being the techno kind of guy I figured you'd know when they're viable.

that'd be neat but since i have 12 bulbs I'd like to replace them all at the same time so parts of the rooms aren't in different colors, and at today's prices i don't think i could afford 12 65watt eq. LED flood lamps as the incandescnets cost about $5 each the LED versions would run about 25 each and since its still early I'd like for them to get the drivers more reliable... the early curly fluorescents tended to blow out early and often.
I imagine the LEDs have a long life but the driver electroincs required to get Low voltage high current from high voltage and low current have some improving that can be done.
