How do I extract a clip from DVD for Youtube?

I have been asked to extract a clip from a home-made DVD and upload to Youtube. How do I do this?

The original video files are not available now.

i imagine you have to rip the DVD back to MPG4 or AVI or WMV or other PC friendly format then use a video editor to get the clip you want.

So which software should I use for that? Do I need to buy or are there any freeware available?

This is when Google fails me : too many results, all from vendors (and no reviews from independent sources), offering 'free download' when they mean the download is free but the software itself needs to be paid for, for full functionality !

I am okay paying, but not for any experimental stuff, only for something that would work well.

You can use a program called "Handbrake". It's free to download and use. This will extract chapters of the DVD. If you just want part of a chapter, you'll need some video editing software too. I think iMovie can handle it if you're on a map, and maybe Windows Movie Maker if you're on a PC?

I think you need FLA Converter

for that project. You can Google for "FLA CONVERTER" and I think there's some freeware out there. If I'm not mistaken, YouTube is FLA files.

FYI for future searches, using the term "freeware" will help you weed out a lot of those.
