    Mac or PC or Linux

Just out of curiousity, what kind of computer operating system is everyone using? I switched from PC "only" to Mac and PC a little over a year ago. I use the Mc for web design and graphics work and every day use and the PC for other Windows only tasks (MS Access).

I don't want to start a what is better than what contest, just curious.

I wonder how long it will take this thread to get locked down?
The subject is more dangerous than politics on some forums.

I'm pretty much straight PC. I just haven't had the time or inclination to try a flavor of linux. Until recently Autocad has been pretty much a PC app.

PC for me. I've used PC's since college. Macs have advantages, unfortunately, the $ & limited program types for what I do will probably keep me in PC's for a while.

Combination. Work laptop and desktop are Windows 7. Home PC is dual boot Windows 7 and Linux. Home server is Linux.

Wait.... is this a religion question? I sure hope nobody starts a poll about vi or emacs. That would really get the flames flying. Just for the record, I'm a vim person.

As to the topic at hand, I voted combination. While my preference is Linux and I use it almost exclusively at home, most of my computing is done at work on a windows machine. My home linux distribution is Fedora Core 8. (Yeah, I know it's not the most current, but it works well right now, so why break it?)

            Combination.

Work PC is Windows with CentOS running in a VM. Home desktop is CentOS with Windows XP running in a VM. Wife's home PC is Windows XP with CentOS running in a VM. My home servers are Linux, one CentOS, the other Mandriva. Work servers are mostly Linux, with a little bit of Windows and Solaris to make things interesting...

I recently got Sketchup and Corel Draw running under WINE, that leaves only compatibility with work PCs left as a reason for me to run Windows at home at all...

Oh, for the record, I am a vim user as well. And STRONGLY prefer the bash shell over tcsh.

All are pc's (personal computers), but the last two I bought, both came with Vista. I have one game that I hadn't played in years after my last Windows system died, so it has been replaced. I am primarily a Linux guy now, but lately have been looking at playing with some BSD stuff as well.

all three : though I have the older Mac, not the intel one. Problem for me is that I can no longer upgrade to the latest softwares as all those are now written for the intel chip. It still competes easily with my wintel/xp though neither is as snappy as the Mandriva 2007 (I know, need to upgrade...).

For the record - vim is my go-to editor (to be accurate - gvim, the gui version just to be consistent across all platforms) : love the way it runs rings around any other. Don't even remember when I last updated it - what's the latest version, bthorne?

Writing this from a Windows machine on my desk. Also use four Macs, and several Linux machines. FreeBSD, too.

                  I like them all.

At work, we are all Windows. No choice there, some specialized software is only available on Windows.

At home, I currently have a 40/60 between Windows XP and Linux. I'm pretty comfortable with both, and use windows on the two desktops (his and hers) due to software avilability. The home file server is Linux (old components with a low power MB), the netbook is Linux (cheaper, and better configurability on the desktop to not waste space on a small display), and the old laptop got switched to Linux because it is old and was getting to slow in Windows, even with a fresh install.

I have no idea what the latest version of Vim is. Whatever version comes pre-installed with the distribution is fast enough for me.

I meant Fedora, which is now at Fedora 11. I got my Fedora 8 box tweaked to perfection a few years ago running MythTV and serving as a DVR. I haven't updated it because it's working fine as is, and LOML knows how to use it. Prior to FC8, she had a knack for crashing linux boxes that had been running forever. Never figured out how she was doing it. Now instead of "Linux always crashes!" it's "I like Linux!" Don't want to risk changing her mind again.

At the moment we have two Mac's, one iMac and a MBP, both running Windows in VM. I also have a Windows netbook and a older Windows box in the shop/garage.
