We have an older desktop with XP Pro & have been using Outlook 2003 for mail. I bought LOML a laptop for her birthday. It has Vista Home Premium (64 bit), but, does not have Outlook installed. She is currently using checking her account (hotmail) online. My question is whether it's possible to import data from Outlook on the desktop to the Windows Mail on Vista?

Importing Outlook Data to Vista Windows Mail
That link will get the job done if you are referring to Outlook Express.
The only gotcha I found in do that, is that where it says copy the data to the new computer, you really have to. I put the drive of the olc PC into the new box as a second drive, and tried to import form there. No Dice.
I had to copy the data to where it said to copy the data, and import from there.

Well, we have Outlook, not Express. I wouldn't think it would be that different, however. I'll give it a shot & see what happens. Thanks.Check here -- is this it?

Sorry, that's what I meant, too. The file formats are different.
I'm not familiar with the email program you're trying to get your information to, but I have done a bit of fumbling around with Outlook import/export. Have you examined your target program's import/export capabilities? The trick is to match them up.
Usually, tab- or comma-delimited formats can be made to work. If your target program can import .pst, that would be ideal, as it's the native format of Outlook.

OK - here's how it's done (after much experimenting!).
Open Outlook.
Click on the Contacts section.
Now click on "File" menu, select "Import and Export."
Select "Export to a file."
Select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)."
Click "Next>"
Select "Contacts" folder, click "Next>."
Choose a location in the resultant window, or accept the default, but leave the default file name (ends with .csv)
Click on "Finish."
Close Outlook.
Copy file to the laptop computer.
Open "Windows Contacts" in Vista Start Menu.
Click on "Import" in the Menu Bar.
Select "CSV (Comma Separated Values) and click on "Import."
Browse to (locate) the file exported from Outlook (ending in .csv), select it and click "Next>"
Choose the fields you want to import (or select "as is."
Click on "Finish." The contacts will import into Windows Contacts.
Close the Import window.
Open Windows Live Mail.
Select "Contacts."
Click on the "File" menu, select "Import."
Select "Address book for current Windows user."
Your contacts are imported into Windows Live Mail. "OK" the window to close it.
Now select "View" and select "List with preview." Job done!

I used to just move the .pst folders around directly but that was moving from outlook to other versions of outlook not to Windows Mail. What I would do on the computer I was moving to is create the account in Outlook and let it set up the file structure. Then I would replace the .pst file with the one from the old machine and I had all my contacts, mail, etc automatically there. Things like this are why I moved to web-based mail though. Well that and I use 2 or 3 computers on a routine basis. I realize that not everybody does.David

I know, the convenient thing would be to just use the hotmail account online. We'll see, she may get there eventually. The only reason I'm trying to figure this out is b/c when we switched to DSL, she was pretty insistent that e-mail still be able to be checked with Outlook.I used to just move the .pst folders around directly but that was moving from outlook to other versions of outlook not to Windows Mail. I considered buying the new version of Outlook, but, I saw that Vista also has a calendar feature built into it now. That was the other feature from Outlook she liked. Do you think the same basic procedure would work for calendar information? I really don't know if there's enough stuff in her calendar to make it worth the effort.
Of course, about the time I get this taken care of, she could decide she likes the web based mail & just use that. No one else's wife ever changes her mind, right?

I can’t answer for sure but I recently had like a crush in my hard disc (maybe, because I recently bought the Recovery CDs and they did not do the complete job, so I’m using my laptop lately); well, I used to have my hotmail account in Outlook Express for yrs. Recently, like a month or two, I have not been able to check my mail in Outlook. They’ve been saying for the last yrs that they will remove those accounts to have access from Outlook for free.We have an older desktop with XP Pro & have been using Outlook 2003 for mail. So if you are having problems, in XP or Vista it could be just for that. They want you to go to their website, maybe hoping you will buy something there; and if you want to have now your account again at your Outlook (any of them) you will have to pay for that.
I just decided to move all my account to yahoo.
Hopefully this serves as informative.Last edited by Al R.; 10-07-2009, 11:36 AM."The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases"....it happens the same with a big shop.Comment
