    AC Speed controls

Anyone know where/how to put in a speed control for an AC motor? I was thinking similar to a dimmer switch for a fan, but want to put it on my disc/belt sander to slow the motor down. I imagine I would have to use a similar variable speed control like a lathe uses... any help?

Speed controls that vary the voltage will work on any motor that has brushes.

If the motor is an induction motor the speed control must very the frequency as well as the voltage.

Fan speed controls only work on shaded pole motors or those with brushes.

    hope this helps.

Master53yoda is correct. It depends greatly upon the type of motor.
Generally speaking a disk belt sander will PROBABLY have a induction motor whih can't be used with the garden variety lamp dimmer and motor speed controls.

Only motors with brushes - so-called universal motors - can work with the router speed controls and inexpensive motor speed controls. A brushed motor will have some ports for changing the brushes.
