    DSLR and the right lenses

I came across this today, it seems relevant to those where asking/talking about getting a new or first DSLR camera. Now the most I know about lenses is, when you break your glasses and loose a lens in the snow you're never going to find it. This article was aimed at people like me and gives some basic info and good advice without going hog wild with technical details that most non-camera buffs won't understand.

Good article. I agree it's all about the lenses, however I've never found a cheap lens that has performed really well. I'm lucky in that I have a coworker that also uses Canon cameras and has an amazing collection of great lenses that he's willing to lend me. His 70-200 f2.8L is amazing. I have a nice birder lens (EF 100-400) that I lend him.

good article on the lenses and the ins and outs of fitting them to the cameras.
I think one thing he missed is the difficulty in using these lenses. for example, Most people can't use more than about 135 mm without using a tripod, that was not emphasized. And there's severe depth distortion at either end. He suggests you can get the whole dinner party in the picture with an extreme wide angle but omits to say the people on the edges and more distant will be tiny and the people in the middle an closer will be big and fat. There's a lot more to effective use of very wide and very tele lenses that will fill a book.

I have 35 years of photographic experience that have taught me these things. Most people buying these lenses have no idea how to effectively use them for anything except cropping pictures at the camera.
