ordered a new saw - finally

Morning all,

I'm so excited. Yesterday I went to the 'local' Woodcraft store in Ventura to order my new saw.

I ordered a SawStop contractor saw with the 36" T glider fence, cast iron wings and their mobile base. Hopefully they will get it before next weekend so I can get some playtime in the garage.

I know there has been lots of discussion on the SawStop and the price of it, but I personally think my safety is worth it. The only thing I think is way overpriced is their mobilebase, and I was seriously considering getting a generic one to save around $60 but in the end decided to go with SawStops.

Sounds great! Despite all the controversy, I think this is a great innovation. The current cost seems about right, all things considered, especially since each cut off finger will cost you about $3-5000 in medical bills.

It's next on my list for a big tool purchase.

Congrats on the new saw Jesper. I'm sure you will love it. The same is true with the mobile base. I have a SawStop mobile base under my SawStop cabinet saw, and I love it. I initially thougt it was a little pricey, but after installing and using the mobile base, it is well worth the money. When you consider the ease of use, and how quickly it can lift the saw, allowing you to quickly move the saw, and lower the saw into place, and then back again, the $60 difference is money wisely spent. SawStop engineers excellence, and their mobile base is not an exception.

Did you order the replacement cartridge so that after the first time you test it you can get right back to work? That is after you recover from the heart attack

The only real controversy as I see it is a political one with the way the lawyer / inventor of the Saw Stop technology tried, and continues to try to force the rest of the industry to adopt his technology, at licensing fees he sets, using the courts and legislature as a big stick to force his will...

A pity really because the technology as I see it is a giant leap forward is shop safety, and is worth a few extra bucks.

If he would give up on the using the courts approach I would happily save up, and plunk down the price for a similarly equipped saw (fitted with a 50" rail / fence setup...). And I must admit cosmetically I really like the look of the gloss black compared to say the White of Jet, the cream of Shop Fox, or the various greens (Grizzly and Central Machinery etc...).

Congrats on the saw, I hope it is everything you you want it to be and more. It will be a big step toward setting up shop and your work should show immediate improvement, the reviews I have seen were all positive beside the cost.

Politics and safety features aside, the Saw Stop saws are still top notch quality. It would be a different story if they were premium priced with ho-hum performance but great safety.

My problem with the Saw Stop is that, unless the technology has changed, it can't tell if the moisture is an appendage or a peice of treated wood. For me that would be a lot of $$$ in brakes and blades.

As far as I know you can override (disable) the safety for that same reason, but until now I have never cut any moist wood, so hopefully it wount be a problem.

finally - it took 2 weeks for the saw to arraive, but yesterday it was here. I'm still not done assemble the saw (was busye with other things saturday), but hopefully in a couple of hours I will be ready to turn it on

The inventor of the Saw Stop is using a tried-and-true method for advancing his business interests. Same thing happened with ethanol, T. Boone has tried the same thing with natural gas, and there's a steady stream of lobbyists in state capitols advancing similar agendas.

I also like Saw Stop's technology but I hate the idea of handing someone a monopoly (unless I have the monopoly!).

Finished assemble and adjusting the saw and did the first testcut - before clearning the off the oil from the top, I couldnt wait

Now the problem is the dust collection, since this one has a 4" port I cant hook it up to my vacuum, maybe I should stop at HF today and buy their cheap dust cullector.
