Uh-uh, I've been handed some pretty nasty stuff that came from a bottle or can that had a label with the word, "beer" on it. Couldn't ever figure out why the purveyors were happily drinking the stuff!

Yup, right on all accounts. Youengling IS a lager, and IMHO very tasty. Having lived in the UK for a few years one of my favorites was to have a "lager and lime". A pint of larger with a small shot of lime. After coming back to the US gave up trying to explain to bar keeps just what I wanted. Now, Youengling is available in my area I'm on an education campaign to educate the locals on what the term "larger and lime" means. Its a tough job but someone has to do it!

It is a very good beer, but not available in ohio. Brought back three cases of lager and premium when I was in Pennsylvania this tuesday.

Yeungling just became availible around here in the last year or so I will have to give it a shot after reading the high regard you have for it. I have recently been drinking Wernesgruner German brew. I found it for $6 a six pack at a local grocer it has a nice taste with a little bitterness that I havent found in any domestic but Sam Adams.

Drillman, you won't be disappointed. It is my house beer. The Black and Tan is pretty good too but for an every day beer I prefer the regular.

When I stumbled across this thread I thought it was about the virtues of Chinese beer(some of which are very very good). I used to get Tsing Dao at my local gas station/beer store.

I have three classifications in the Tom scale.
"I can see though it" is light
"It's had to see though" is medium
"I can't see though it" is dark

Lagers can be as many colors as Ales, look at Bock and DoppelBock.

I bought a six pack of black and tan, I enjoyed it much more than the regular. The regular reminded me of a beer called red dog that may not be made any more. It just doesn't have the bite, the bitterness that I enjoy. I haven't tried any domestic for a good while so it may be my taste buds need to be retrained. I enjoy a good ale or German beer much more.

The bitterness is hops. You should try an IPA - India pale ale. Those are hoppy because originally the beer was barrelled in the U.K. and had to survive a trip to india on a sailing ship. The way they preserved the beer was to add a lot of hops. You would have liked the Schnells I had last week.

I got to try two new beers when I was around Lancaster, PA last week. Troegs and Anchor Steam. Both were good, the Anchor steam was excellent. I think I may have had an Anchor Steam 25 years ago, but it's been long enough that I'm considering it a new find. The Anchor is just a tad on the hoppy side for my tastes, but there's plenty of flavor to back it up. The best brew I've had all summer is Sackett's Harbor War of 1812 Ale...just right!

Anchor is one of my favorites. If you are ever in San Francisco make sure to tour the brewery.

I do enjoy a good India pale ale. Anchor steam is one that has been recommended but I haven't tried . We have a local brew pub that makes an excellent ale, nice and hoppy. I don't care for their stout as much doesn't come close to Guiness.
I enjoy the ales from Palmetto Brewing Company, http://www.palmettobrewingco.com/, If you like a good ale you should give it a shot.

I thought the same about Grain Belt before the AB takeover. Good, cheap beer. But at least Leinie's hasn't been messed with. Can't go wrong with a Honey Weiss.
