Actually my guess is the company directive is deny deny deny. Most people will just give up and are not musicians who can get this publicity. It costs them far less in the long run than paying for every claim.

Oh and I'm never flying United again. Long story as short as possible, flying home from Green Bay some years ago with my wife and then 15m old daughter. Our flight from Green Bay to Chicago was delayed as were the two before us. They did get us out of Green Bay after mishandling everything about that experience including telling me I couldn't be rebooked on a later flight without a change fee. I did not pay the change fee. We got to O'hare barely in time to make the flight home. I asked a United gate agent best way to get to the terminal our flight was leaving from and she said 'that's not my job'. An AA gate agent escorted us to the shuttle. We get to our gate with the other passengers boarding. I go up to the ticket agent to confirm our seats. I am holding our boarding passes mind you. My wife's seat has disappeared enroute from Green Bay. She couldn't rebook because there were no more coach seats unless I wanted to pay for first class. After I very quietly erupted, she decided we could get a free upgrade. All I told my wife about it was I got us a free upgrade.

The chief cause of failure in this life is giving up what you want most for what you want at the moment.
