    Roddick v Federer Result

The men's final at Wimbledon was a really epic match today. Federer's win (17 - 15) in the fifth set was justified, but Andy Roddick played his heart out and - in the earlier stages - the match could have gone either way. Brilliant!

I watched a huge portion of that match—some of the best tennis I've seen in a long, long time. Kudos to both.

No losers in that battle, although Roddick got beat…

Great match. Too bad they didn't just call the match and give them both a first-place trophy. Richard

that was an epic battle. Both players played equally up until that last set (77th game of the match) where Andy got broken. Andy will regret having missed his chance in the 2nd set tiebreaker when he had a 6-2 lead and 4 set points an lost the set. Winning any of those four points would have given him a 3-1 victory after four sets if everything else played out the same.

I thought you had to win by two, so how does Federer win 7-6 then again 7-6? I will never understand tennis scoring, and I've tried.

7-6 means they were tied at 6-6 and had to go into a tie-break. The one who won the tie-break had to win it by 2 points though.

So Federer won 7-6 but it wasn't really 7-6? Was it 8-6? Or 9-7? Or 13-11?

                Try this:

In the men's singles, in all sets apart from the fifth set (if needed), when the players reach 6 games each, there is a tie-break declared. In a tie-break game, there is an initial serve, followed by pairs of serves by each player in turn. Each winning point scores 1. The players change ends after every six points, even if a player is between his two service points. The winner is the player who is two points clear at or above six points. Therefore, 6-4 is a winning tie-break score, as are 7-5, 9-7 and so on.

Because the tie-break occurs at 6-6, when a player wins the tie-break, that game win is added to their current score (6), hence they win the set with a game score of 7-6.

In the final set (fifth set for men, third set for women), tie-breaks are not used, so players carry on until one is two games clear, at or above 6 games, which is why the match continued until 17-15. Does that help?
