    Trivia Question

There will be no cheating to find an answer. No Google or Dogpile, or Bing on this one. We all will know who was the weak one and fell to the low down practice of searching for an answer and making all of us believe you're so darn smart. Your computers' history will be checked by sophisticated forum software and you will be EXPOSED. Subsequently, you will live a life of shame and disgrace.

Just a guess, but I would think it was so they could be buttoned looser or tighter around gloves at some point in time. (open air cars, motorcycles, old working conditions like the ice delivery)

The zipper hadn't been invented yet, so they used buttons.

A good place to sew spares buttons to replace lost or broken buttons on the trouser fly.

They look awkward without them. Seriously. Anyone else notice how all of your nice clothes button everywhere there is an opening (neck, waist and sleeves) and your play clothes just button where its needed?
