    Long Weekend

Last Friday morning I drove to Wichita Falls to check on my step father and clean some flower beds for him. Visited a bit on Friday after I got there and then hit the beds on Sat AM. When I hauled off the cuttings the thermometer in the truck read 106. Found out later that the high had been 111.

Sat evening I drove to my brother's place in Richardson (Dallas) to pick up some furniture he had that was my Mother's. Between Decatur and Denton the thought hit me that I had a pleasant breeze coming in the window. I glanced up at the overhead readout to see a temp reading of 98!

We sat BS'ing over a couple of bourbon and waters untill about 2 AM. Got up at 10 and loaded the furniture then visited for a while. Rolled for home about 4 PM in 106 heat. When I pulled off the interstate at 8:15 the temp was a pleasant but slightly balmy 99.

To recap; 5 hours cleaning flower beds in 111 degreee heat, 30 minutes loading furniture at 100 or so, and 748 miles around Texas in a truck with a broke AC.

I had to go to work today just for the rest!

I'm impressed. Now are you gonna get that A/C in the truck fixed this week?

See the heat really got to him

Pappy had Air Conditioning the traditional Texas 2X60 (two windows down going 60mph)with the temperature at 98 and a wind of 60 mph the wind chill would make it feel a lot cooler.

At one time I moved from St. Louis to Dallas. I noticed that the forecasters in STL woujld refer to "hot" weather when temps reached 90. In Dallas it had to get to 100 to be hot.

I don't care where you are, 111 is REALLY hot.

Yeah, like if the humidity was lower the entire state would make an excellent kiln.

That's what Arizona and New Mexico are for.

(That's not a mean jab, I would HAPPILY move back to Tucson if I could...)

In the old days they used sweat boxes to cure syphilis, then later they were used to torture prisoners (remember "Bridge on the river Kwai"?). Now they use them for driving around Texas and hauling furniture. That's progress!

(BTW the high today is going to be 70--nice breeze too!)

I don't know about that, I was sweating plenty. Crawling inside a cabinet carcass putting in drawer slides wasn't fun.

Pappy, you're supposed to do the driving early mornings or later evenings. I don't have the luxury of AC in my car either.

Finally having power to a window AC unit in my shop is spoiling me. The fan came loose Sat. afternoon again. I tried panting like my dogs were, but that just makes my mouth dry and really lightheaded. I couldn't take it anymore by Sunday afternoon. So I fixed it with a wood scrap from the day before.
