and doing away with the self-checkout lanes among other things. I actually like them. I am usually only getting one or two things and that is a quick way to get out of the store. I hope this means they are increasing the # of cashiers. They are always chronically understaffed there.

I always try to avoid the self check-outs, even if it means waiting a bit longer. They have six of these check-outs maintained by one person. That's five jobs out the door per Walmart In our poor economic state, we need to try and save jobs. From the "deep south" part of Canada

I utterly despise the self check out lanes. The Kroger by our house has them, and rarely has enough cashiers to keep from waiting an hour to go through a regular lane, and I ALWAYS have trouble with the timer getting merchandise into a bag. The stupid thing ALWAYS complains...

Me too. I've almost given up on going to the BORG. As soon as they put the things in they went down to one cashier.
The line for that one lane is always long- and the self check outs aren't any faster. I've been going to Lowes and Menards since they put those things in.Comment

Never mind all the jobs Walmart killed everywhere they went and squashed smaller businesses, which is why you will never catch me in a Walmart in the first place.
But I agree, I avoid those self checkouts wherever I see them. Cub Food has started with them around here too.Comment

I have used the self-checkout and now put things down and walk away if I am relegated to that line. In my area I heard the stuff about walmart killing off other businesses. I can't find anyone that can tell me the name of a business in my area that died because of walmart. However we do have a number of places that really improved their service and selection after Walmart moved in. And this is ten years later.Comment

One of our two Walmart's is the largest in the state. They have the 3 types of checkouts, self checkout, under 20 items, and cashier. Usually they are well staffed.
Despite the size of the store, they frequently do not carry the items I am shopping for and when they do it seems it is always on the other end of the store. The store is 222,751 square feet and employs about 410 people.Comment

I don't mind the self-checkouts. What I despise is waiting, which I have to do every time I buy something at a local Walmart or Costco. Consequently, I don't go to them very often. My time is too valuable to stand in line for a few dollars of savings. Especially since I can't use all the tools in the world to make any more time for myself.Comment

I WISH my local wally-world had self checkout. The check out lines are constantly WAY UNDER staffed and slow as molasses in January. I think they should work off commission so they would pick up the pace a little. They could care less if you have to wait in the 20 or less line for an hour.
Ok, I'll pass the soap box now..

I am extremely doubtful that doing away with the self-checkouts is going to mean that many more cashiers. Walmart understaffs. That is part of how they get their cost savings. I don't care whether there are self-checks or cashiers, I just don't want to wait.David

I love self checkouts, and use them whenever I can. Sadly, I find I'm much more efficeint rining things up than the "professionals" are. And frankly, my time is worth too much to whittle it away waiting in line. I don't need them to pay me to use them.Comment
