A new day from Home Depot

Went to BORG last night to get some stuff to make another set of flagpoles for the Grandfather Mountain games,

Was wandering aimlessly with my kidiots in tow...

when I ran across a fellow that my daughter said "Hi, my name is Samantha" to which he just smiled,

we chatted with the gentlemen for a few moments and the I said in an offhand way, I wonder where they keep the bungie cords, at which point this guy, walks over to the mill-work center, whips out his orange vest, and proceedes to assist me...

I am going on the record to say that I recieved good customer service at a home depot.

    And I am still shocked...

Hmm... It must vary store to store. The two stores around here that are nearest me I generally get good help when I ask for it.

My local store has been exhibiting excellent customer service the six months or so. Greeter at the door, greeter in the center of the store, staff working the aisles friendly and helpful.

They're trying to open another store accross town and getting some political resistance, so it may all be a ploy. OTOH, they may actually trying to do good. Who knows?

I have noticed a remarkable difference in my local store. The last time I was there, I almost got annoyed at how many different times I was asked if I needed help. There were more employees than I have seen and they were all friendly. I was looking around for Rod Serling.

The trick in the stores near me is that the orange vest doesn't mean that the person wearing it knows anything about the particular department you see them in. The "specialist" is always somewhere else being mistaken for a "specialist" in another department. They should stamp right on the vest where the heck they belong.

Wow! My store has a a handful of people working the whole place. I can't remember being offered help at a BORG in ages. The Lowes across the street goes out of their way to help- although sometimes I admit it can be a bit much.

Do you know what really bugs me about HD?

At our HD they have these workers walking around with clip boards.

They routinely come up to you and ask if you are finding everything ok.

Unfortunately, they are just people trying to sell you installation services.

They don't know anything, including where anything is located.

I have yet to get a useful response from one of them other than "um, I don't work this section, let me get someone that knows their way around".

I noticed this happening at both Lowes and HD right after the economy tanked. In fact it got to be really annoying at Lowes as we were asked if we could be helped a gazillion times going down one aisle. Doubt it will last for long. Typical of business these days, when times are good they couldn't care less about the individual customer but let business slow down and all of a sudden they fall over themselves to help. OH well, here I go again, ranting. Gotta stop that!

I believe you are right it has to do with the economy. I was in the local Lowes the other day and noticed they had changed their hours to 6-10 Mon thru Fri they had been opening at 7:30 on weekdays.

One time at our local Borg, the staff was acting weird. People asking if we needed any assistance. I asked what was going on, and was told "Oh, corporate is here". Several days later it was business as usual, hunt down and corner the help.

We had a new Lowe's open up in our very small town. The people try very hard to be helpful, but most of the time I don't want help. I really don't want to explain all the details of my project while I'm scouting and pricing materials and supplies. If I'm looking for some oak trim or moulding, I don't need them to tell me about the polystyrene stuff that looks like oak. I sure don't need to explain why I need real oak and have them look at me like I've suddenly sprouted cabbages or something. Oops, I'm starting to rant too.

Here's what I've noticed at the three Home Depot's I have to drive past on my daily commute. No competition means crappy service

HD in Plymouth near my office. You have to practically tackle and hog tie an employee to ask a question, which they won't know the answer to. The nearest Menards or Lowes are miles away and a pain to get to

HD In Bloomington, They treat you like you're interrupting them as soon as you walk in. There's a Menards on the other side of the freeway but again, it's a pain to get to.

HD on Robert Street in Inver Grove. Very helpful and friendly, almost annoyingly so. There's a Menards and a Lowes within a mile, all three built or rebuilt withing the last 5 years.

Incidentally, Wal-Mart built a huge new store on the same street. K-Mart and Target both tore down their 40+ year old buildings and now have shiny new buildings with helpful employees.
