    computer catch-22

My keyboard has been intermittent for a while skipping d's and a few other keys sometimes depending on how hard i whacked the key,

So while cleaning up I found a new microsoft media keyboard with USB and unplugged my old PS-2 connector keyboard and plugged this one into the XP computer.
Ding- new hardware found. Being the office computer, DING - you must have adminstrator rights to install new hardware.
POP - pop-up screen prompting user name (for one who has admin rights) and admin password.
OK I know that.. go to type it in....
Nothing types, dead keyboard (of course, its not authorized for installation yet)

    User -0, computer-1.

Back to the old keyboard for now. (how is it can i plug that in and have it work and not the new one?)

I guess i'll try and see if it accept the new keyboard when i boot the computer up... I suspect i can't. oh well.

Just keep the old keyboard connected at the same time, and use that old keyboard to key-in the password.

login to the machine as the admin, then do the switch.

Did you try a manual typewriter?

Reminds me of the boot error I used to get on one of my older machines:
"Error: Keyboard not attached. Press F1 to continue".

Can you type the password into a file, swap keyboards, then cut&paste it in?

Since the new one is usb and the old one is PS2 there should be no problem having both keyboards connected at the same time.

Provided the password doesn't have that missing D in it
