    Toenail fungus

My wife has a toenail fungus, which makes the nails very thick and discolored. You couldn't cut some of the nails with normal clips. I had to do it using nail clippers for dogs.

She received an e-mail a few weeks ago, telling of uses for hydrogen peroxide. One of the tips was to spray the infected nails with a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and water. We've been doing this for 2 - 3 weeks, twice daily. There is now a big improvement! It seems to be working. The discoloration is gone, and the nails are not as thick as before. The medication to treat this fungus is expensive, so she never got it. Just thought I'd pass this tip along in case someone is having this problem. It's as very affordable possible solution.

That medicine is so expensive because they need to pay those animators who work on the lamisil (sp?) commercials! Really, the pharma companies love to make drugs for those types of conditions (not medically necessary, but lifestyle impact (hello Viagra)).

It seems like I’ve seen digger and his buddies living under the toenails for a long time now, maybe it’s getting close to the end of the patent?

Checked: Wikipedia says the patent expired a bit less than a year ago, so maybe there’s a cheaper generic available now if it’s been a while since she talked to her doctor about it. Of course that’s moot if the h202 is working well for her!

A dilute solution of bleach (1:10) will work also, according to my grandfather.

I have done some checking, and most if not all RX damage the liver. I prefer to take care of damaging my liver in more enjoyable ways. Remy straight up.

Your cure will also help with the toenail problem — After enough Remy (or other beverage of your choice) you just won't worry about it anymore!

                  Hey Ed,

Even I find the image of your wife's condition gross.

You've finally hit a new low. I'm now stuck with that image in my mind and I was just about to get lunch.

                  Thanks

                  Bruce

Hate to burst your bubble, but *nothing* will cure toenail fungus except antifungal medication. I generally recommend Lamisil, although fluconazole works about half the time.

Risk of liver damage is very small (<1 percent)--I've never seen it in almost 20 years of ID practice.

Unless a person is willing to spend money and really committed to taking meds for entire time (12 weeks), he'd be better off just seeing a podiatrist and having them debride nails with a dremel tool every couple of months.

I, too, have toenail fungus and my Dr. wrote me a generic prescription for a 30 day supply with 2 refills and instructed me to go to Walmart where the cost is only $9. It's only been 2 weeks so I don't have the results yet. I also have to have a blood test every month while using this med. because of other problems.

I had a bad nail and using google arrived at the suggestion of rubbing Vick's Vapor Rub on and around the nail. Apparently it works for some, not for others (although some people use generic which may be different, and some people that say it doesn't work clearly work for big pharma ).

For me, it worked. Within a couple of weeks you could see beautiful new nail emerging. It was interesting to watch the line in the nail between the fungal nail and the new nail. Every week the line moved out until all that was left was nice new nail. That was two years ago.

Today the nail is still perfect.

Without getting too complicated, not everything that looks like a fungus is a fungus. There are many reasons for nail separation, dystrophic nails, discolored nails, etc. That's why many if not most insurance companies insist on a positive fungal culture before they will cover the above meds.

I have seen a lot of grody nails and have personally have never seen a nail infection cured by Vick's, but hey, if it worked for you...
