It won't be long before we'll have to have a room just for the TV. That format is pretty impressive, though.

      Not all movies are 2.39:1

      What about movies in 1.85:1?

      Or HDTV in 16:9?

I think this is just a gimmick... who cares about having black bars on their screens??

I've grown to be most fond of 16:10. If I were to watch 4:3 on that 50% of what I'd see would be the Grey bars.

most people wide screen tv's i've seen don't have the proper aspect ratio selected. People are too wide or too skinny. Another format won't help matters any especially since most sets don't now support it.

Most people either don't notice, don't care, or don't know it can be adjusted. When we got my in-laws a small wide screen LCD a year or two ago, we didn't even tell them about changing the aspect ratio. They can barely remember what button to press to select the input for the DVD player, and my mother-in-law doesn't deal well with electronics at all. So it is set to stretch non widescreen programs, and that is fine. You are very tech savy and can handle it, many people are not. So, I'll agree, it would be more confusing and probably not a very good idea right now.

Heck, I'm tech savy and I find the aspect ratios confusing. Right now there is 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10. The later of the two always are a pain. Why can't this be standardized?

I'm fine with letterbox or pillarbox framing but squished or stretched people drive me insane.

I agree that for the non tech savvy it can seem complicated, but it's really not that bad... If the user really cannot be bothered then I would set it to keep the correct display ratio even if it means there will be both letterboxing and pillarboxing on some content (SD channels showing something letterboxed). If they want the extra realestate in those cases then it's good incentive to learn how to cycle through the ratio, resolution, and zoom settings .

My mother hasn't come around yet, but my dad and grandmother have so there's even some hope for the old fogies.
