    Am I overreacting?

I just got home to find the tile guy that came back today to repair some cracked grout in a recent install borrowed some tools of mine. No big deal EXCEPT for the fact that he neglected to bring a chisel to a grout removal job, and you guessed it, he used my recently sharped, mirror finished wood chisels to hammer out the grout.

I know the Godfather would not grant a full whacking, since the chisels still live. This would not be justice. But I believe this calls for at the very least a knee capping...

That is just plain wrong. Never borrow tools without permission from the owner.

Do you know about kickback? Ray has a good writeup here... https://www.sawdustzone.org/articles...mare-explained

If he had to borrow your tools to repair the grout that cracked after a recent install, I suspect you now know why the grout cracked in the first place.

If you have another tile job, I'd find a new tile guy.

I think a Luca Brasi blade-through-the-hand treatment would be suitable.

"Gosh, it's a shame that chisel's so dull and ragged. If it were still as sharp as I'd left it, you wouldn't even have felt that!"

Don't just say no to kickback.

I would be 10 levels of ticked off . Taking tools without asking is a pet peeve of mine.

Other than never doing business with him again, not much recourse. Make sure to tell everyone you know about your experience with his professionalism and move on.
If you can read this you assembled wrong.

Yeah, I hate to say it but I suspect the floor isn't rigid enough.

My 22 YO son did something similar and I was plenty upset with the damaged edge. A paid professional doing something like that without permission just blows my mind.....that's just hard to excuse. Now a neighbor down the street who's "doing you a favor" on the cheap is a little more understandable, not good mind you, but at least more understandable.
Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

I would ask him to replace the chisel... explain that the chisel he borrowed was not designed to be used in that fashion, and that you would have gladly allowed him to borrow a more appropriate tool, like a large screw-driver or something...

                    be polite

                    be professional

and have a .38 snubnose sticking out of your trouser tops, or at the very least meet him with a putting iron as a walking stick...

or you can always explain it to him, while you are sharpening a sword I'd be happy to let you borrow

My mechanic has a sign in his shop:

"DON'T ASK TO BORROW MY TOOLS,
AND I WON'T ASK TO BORROW YOUR WOMAN"

                      .

I hate when people want to borrow tools. But I also knew a joly joker who would wait until his co-worker bought new screwdrivers and use them as concrete chisels. It was like clock work, the minute a new screwdriver was out of the package the other guy trashed it.

Did you break out the sharpening gear for him, when he was done?
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I'd treat him just like any other terrorist. I do a sex change operation & set him free in Afganistan.
